Chapter forty eight

The final challenge loomed a hand-to-hand combat segment that sent a thrill of nervous anticipation coursing through me. The crowd, their initial amusement at my participation replaced by grudging respect, buzzed with a mix of excitement and apprehension.

"The human princess possesses such surprising strength," a portly court minister remarked, his voice laced with a hint of disbelief.

"Indeed," another noble chimed in, his eyes glued to the arena. "One wouldn't expect such agility from a royal."

A flicker of pride crossed the King's face, a rare display of emotion in the usually stoic ruler. Perhaps, I mused, my unexpected participation had stirred a long-dormant competitive spirit within him.
