Je Ne Sais Quoi (2)

Even though he's exasperating and impractical, I'm grateful for him being my saviour. For some reason, I feel at ease with him, as if I've known him my whole life. It's not a feeling I'm familiar with, but it's comforting. There's something about him that can't be described easily. He's unique. I can't tell if it's in a good way or bad way, but either way, at least he's original.

Wait a minute, did he really see Pavel? I'm miles away from home, and he's gone to see Pavel, yet he must return in time to save me. The question lingers-where did he disappear to?

Kaiserin breaks the embrace he started, then proceeds to put two of his bare hands on my shoulders. He looks happy, but his facade is breaking. What is he truly feeling inside? Are his eyes a window to his emotions, or are they hiding something?

I was in deep thought, but Kaiserin broke the silence and made me think. "Why are you here anyway? This is the place where I least expected you. Count Pavel released a search party for you, too, after you went missing in the afternoon. I was a fool for not hearing the news sooner."

I gave him a nervous smile and replied, "It's a long story."

Kaiserin smiled and began to speak. "Let's sleep in a nearby inn. I don't want the Empress to notice you here. I have a feeling that you don't want her to notice you here, either. Then, by tomorrow, I'll safely drop you off at the Von Halhenstine estate! Perhaps on the way, you could tell me about your long story."

I couldn't lie. That sounds good right now, and I have no reason to object and blindly accept it.

But, by which he meant there was a nearby village? It wasn't in my mind when he said "inn," but a roof over your head is something, and you shouldn't take that for granted. When I met the villagers, they were nice enough to lend us a house for the night, a month if we wanted to! We stayed at a house nobody was living in, so it made things easier for us to stay in.

The villagers seemed not to have known our nobility, even though Kaiserin's outfit would have made it obvious. But he told the villager we were talking to that he was a knight from the front lines needing shelter for the night.

"Of course! Anyone working hard to keep our kingdom safe is welcome in our village!"

Kaiserin smiled as he gripped my hand before kissing it. "Me and my wife are so tired from our travels, we are forever in your debt." I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude towards these kind villagers.

I wanted to roll my eyes at the moment, but to have a roof over our heads, I had to go along.

The villager looked at us in awe before grabbing a key and signalling us to follow him.

"I'm sure this house will suit the two of you, yes? Please! Take this key. Since you're leaving tomorrow, just leave it at our village's church. And again, thank you for what you have done for our country!"

I waved goodbye to the kind and generous villager as Kaiserin opened the door. As we stepped inside, we found a cute and cozy house with one bedroom and a washroom.

Kaiserin held my hand and dropped the key into the palms of my hands. "Liselotte, I'll be right back, I'll get clothes for you to change into. Don't miss me too much!" I couldn't help but wonder, why did he give me the key?

"Uh-huh."

Either way, it doesn't matter that much.
