Die Rose hatte geblüht

Once the rain stopped, Sam and I headed back to our chambers, trailing water behind us.

"Oh my! Your highness!" Lena exclaimed, hurrying over as she noticed us both soaked to the skin. "You must be freezing! Let me get you a towel and some hot milk. And please, don't go outside again."

Lena signaled for me to come inside, paying no mind to my husband. At the threshold, I paused to look back. Sam was a few steps behind, combing his wet hair back with his fingers before he caught my eye.

"I'll be back later," he said with his habitual teasing smile. "And don't catch cold, alright?"

Sam nodded to me, then gestured for me to enter the house. My lips tightened, and I drew a deep breath.

"Sam," I called out, prompting a raise of his eyebrows. "I... forget it."

There were so many things I wanted to tell him but found myself unable to articulate.

"Blood never lies, darling." His smile broadened until his eyes crinkled.
