Gardens in the Sky - III

With the school year soon to begin, Sam was excited about the progress in the garden. Things were going great until one day when Sam opened the back door to have a quick look before lunch. The fledgling black-eyed pea plants had no leaves left on them.

Davey dashed past Sam and ran toward the bean section.

"Ants!" he shouted. "What's this, though, Mister Sam?"

Sam went over to have a closer look. The ants were feasting on a white substance he'd never seen before in the soil. He called his mother over.

Selma looked down. "Hmmm," she said. She reached down and touched the soil. She took a pinch of it and touched it to her tongue.

"Oh yes," said Selma. "Ants do love sugar."

Sam was furious. "Who the heck put sugar in this bean patch?!"

"Very strange indeed," Selma replied. "We need to start lunch, guys. Let's try to figure it out after we eat." They all filed back through the door.

Davey tapped Sam's arm. "Mister Sam," he whispered, "your mama just ate dirt, man!"
