As we ran through the dense jungle, fear, and adrenaline pumping through our veins, I struggled to comprehend the horrors we had just faced. What were those things? I couldn't wrap my mind around it – they seemed like something out of a nightmare, that shouldn't exist in the realm of the living.

Alex carried me on his back, his muscles straining to carry both of our weights. Even in his heightened state, I could tell he was tiring, the strain of our desperate flight taking its toll on him. But still, he pushed on, his determination unwavering as he navigated the treacherous terrain with a speed and agility that defied belief.

We raced through the jungle, the creature hot on our heels, its guttural screams echoing through the darkness. I clung to Alex, my heart pounding in my chest as we pushed ourselves to the limit, desperate to outrun the relentless pursuit of our monstrous foe.

But no matter how fast we ran, it seemed that the creature was always just behind us, its shadow looming large in the darkness. As we reached the stream where Alex and I had shared a playful water fight earlier, a sense of dread washed over me.

"Put me down," I gasped, my voice barely above a whisper. "I can run. I'm tiring you out."

But Alex shook his head, his expression grim with determination. "No," he said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "You can't outrun him."

I felt a chill run down my spine as the gravity of our situation sank in. If even Alex, with his enhanced abilities, couldn't outrun the creature, then what hope did we have? And then, as we continued to run, it dawned on me – we should have taken at least an hour to reach this spot from where we were.

I looked at Alex in shock, realizing just how fast he had been running, carrying me all this way. And if he was struggling to keep up this pace, then how fast was the creature? My mind raced with questions, but there was no time to ponder them now. We had to keep moving, keep running, if we had any hope of surviving.

"What's the plan?" I asked, my voice tinged with urgency.

"We need to find fresh water," Alex replied, his eyes scanning our surroundings. "It's the only way we can fight him. I am thirsty the second gear drained me, and if you are near water you can help a lot with your gift. We need more water."

I frowned, feeling a pang of guilt. "Could you fight him if not for me? Is carrying me tiring you out?" I ask sadly.

"No," Alex said firmly, his gaze meeting mine. "I would never leave you behind for one and two I am used to running like this in second gear. But this thing does not seem to get tired. Regardless we will find a way to shake him."

He paused, a shadow passing over his features. "I wish I didn't have to fight those others earlier," he said quietly. "These things are not human. I rarely have to use the Steps against humans, only other special forces CQC specialists."

He looked away, his expression troubled. "These things are beyond even them in endurance, pain tolerance, and speed."

I swallowed hard, the gravity of our situation sinking in. These creatures were unlike anything we had ever encountered, and we were woefully unprepared.

As we ran, I could feel his muscles tense and flex beneath me, his body a symphony of motion and power. He moved with a grace that belied his size, his every movement calculated and precise.

I clung to him tightly, my heart pounding in my chest, my breath coming in short gasps. I trusted Alex with my life and knew that he would do everything in his power to keep me safe.

The air was thick with tension as we darted through the jungle, our hearts pounding in sync with the rhythm of our footsteps. Suddenly, a sharp twang echoed through the trees, and Alex stumbled, a look of pain flashing across his face as he staggered from the impact of the object piercing his thigh.

My heart lurched in my chest as I watched him grimace, but there was no time to dwell on the injury. With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I called out directions, my voice trembling with fear as I guided Alex through the chaotic dance of evasion.

"Left!" I cried out, my voice strained with urgency as Alex swiftly veered to the left, narrowly avoiding another projectile launched by the creature. "Right!"

He shifted his weight, his movements fluid and graceful as he dodged to the right, narrowly escaping yet another deadly projectile. But with each dodge, the strain on his injured thigh grew more evident, his movements slowing with each passing moment.

As we sprinted through the dense foliage, desperation etched on our faces, I couldn't shake the feeling of dread that gripped my chest. The creature's laughter echoed through the trees, a chilling reminder of the danger that lurked just behind us.

And then, without warning, the ground gave way beneath us, sending us tumbling down a steep bank and into a small ravine. I landed with a thud, the breath knocked from my lungs as I tumbled head over heels, landing unceremoniously on my butt.

My head spun as I tried to regain my bearings, the world spinning around me in a dizzying blur. Through the haze of confusion, I saw Alex lying face-first in the shallow water, his body still and unmoving.

Horror surged through me like a bolt of lightning as I scrambled to my feet, my limbs heavy with dread. I stumbled towards him, every step feeling like an eternity as I fought to reach him before it was too late.

But as I drew closer, a guttural roar tore through the air, freezing me in my tracks. With a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, I realized that the creature was upon us, its twisted form looming over us like a harbinger of death.

Fear gripped me like a vice as I stared into its malevolent eyes, knowing that this could be the end of our journey. But as the creature lunged towards us, its claws outstretched, I knew that I couldn't give up without a fight. With every ounce of strength left in me.

The adrenaline coursing through my veins fueled my actions as I summoned every ounce of strength within me. With a primal roar of defiance, I scooped up a large amount of water from the nearby stream, channeling my newfound abilities into a powerful blast aimed at the approaching monster.

The creature was sent hurtling through the air, crashing into a nearby tree with a resounding thud. I watched with a mixture of relief and exhaustion as it staggered to its feet, its malevolent gaze fixed on me with renewed fury.

I collapsed to my knees, my muscles trembling with exhaustion as I struggled to catch my breath. The effort of using my newfound powers had taken its toll, leaving me drained and depleted. It felt like I had been lifting weights for hours on end, each movement heavy and labored.

But even as fatigue threatened to overwhelm me, I forced myself to crawl towards Alex, who lay unmoving in the center of the ravine. Every inch felt like a mile as I dragged myself forward, my body screaming in protest with every movement.

Before I could reach him, however, the air was rent with the piercing screech of the creature, echoing through the ravine like a haunting melody of despair. My blood ran cold at the sound, my heart pounding in my chest as I braced myself for the inevitable confrontation.

Screechers. That's what I would call them from now on, a fitting name for these horrifying creatures that seemed to thrive on terror and chaos. I hated their screech, the way it clawed at my senses and filled me with dread.

What I looked upon was a grotesque visage of decay and madness, a face twisted by years of isolation and savagery. His features were contorted into a snarling grimace, his mouth a gaping maw of jagged teeth, dripping with saliva and blood. One eye was wild and bloodshot, burned with a feral intensity, while the other socket was a dark, empty void.

With elongated limbs that seemed to defy human anatomy, the figure moved with predatory grace, each step sending shivers down my spine. His arms swung like pendulums, brushing against the gnarled branches that loomed overhead, while his legs propelled him forward with unnerving speed. His long, greasy hair whipped around his face like serpents, framing the decayed features in a grotesque halo of filth.

As he closed in on me, his ragged clothing fluttered in the wind, revealing patches of rotting flesh beneath. The stench of decay filled the air, overpowering my senses and leaving me gasping for breath. Every movement he made seemed to radiate menace, a primal force of nature driven by an insatiable hunger for blood.

My legs burned with exhaustion as I stumbled through the underbrush, my heart pounding in my chest like a drumbeat of doom. The forest seemed to close in around me, the trees twisting and contorting into nightmarish shapes that mocked my futile attempts to escape. With each passing moment, the gap between us grew smaller, until I could feel the heat of his breath on the back of my neck.

Desperation clawed at my mind as I fought to keep moving, to find some shred of sanctuary in this hellish wilderness. But the figure was relentless, his snarling mouth twisted into a cruel smile as he closed in for the kill. At that moment, I knew that there was no escape, no hope of survival in the face of such relentless evil.

"First Step, Third Gear!" echoed in my ears, a surge of conflicting emotions washed over me. Fear and joy intertwined, creating a tumultuous mix of adrenaline and uncertainty. But there was no time to dwell on these feelings as the third gear was engaged.

I watched in awe as Alex, having recovered from the scuffle, acted with lightning speed. He launched himself at the screecher, his movements fluid and precise. With a powerful kick, he sent the creature flying backward, creating a significant distance between us and the threat.

As Alex stood there, muscles rippling and pulsating beneath his skin, I couldn't help but be awed by his strength and agility. He removed his shirt, revealing a physique that was nothing short of impressive. Droplets of water cascaded down his body, highlighting every contour and muscle.

His skin was a deep shade of red, flushed from exertion, and he huffed and puffed like a man possessed. Each breath he took seemed to fuel his determination, his focus unwavering despite the chaos around us.

But the respite was short-lived. The screecher, undeterred by the initial setback, regained its footing and charged at Alex once more. It was a terrifying sight, the creature's twisted form moving with unnatural speed and ferocity.

As they engaged in a fierce battle, the outcome uncertain, I could only watch helplessly, my heart pounding in my chest. The clash of titans was mesmerizing and horrifying, a dance of death unfolding before my eyes.

And then, just as it seemed like Alex might gain the upper hand, the screecher unleashed a devastating blow, knocking him off balance. As Alex stumbled backward, the screecher lunged forward, its claws poised to strike.
