After half an hour of reading, I decided it didn't make sense. All of these old men seem to have gone senile altogether. How could I adopt a child and raise it until reaching 20? I am not even married yet. Besides, I would have to provide him with shelter, food, and education.
I might have said I wanted to quit my job, but after all these years of studying like a horse, I wouldn't actually do it.
"Can we cancel it please?", I looked into the camera with pleading eyes.
"Sure, read page 35 section cancellation fee."
When I heard the first part of his answer, I wanted to jump and hug him. Then the second part made me look at him like I was looking at the devil himself.
"Cancellation fee is twenty times the salary for a year!", What kind of bullshit is this? Ten times the salary for a year? Even if the salary for one year is 50,000 dollars a year, I should still pay 1 million. That's so unfair. I tried to enter through another door...
"Chairman, I don't even have a house. I live in a dormitory. How can I provide your grandchild with housing? Isn't it better to find someone who matches the requirements?"
" I agree to disagree! As far as I know, you're getting a 1000m villa by the weekend. Besides the fact that with my yearly salary, you could buy a fine apartment building if not a luxurious villa!", I was a bit dumbfounded. About buying an apartment with a yearly salary. Was he joking?
" Secretary Kim, has real state sky racked enough that you can't even buy a house with one million dollars?" asked the chairman.
Hearing the one million, I flipped through the document again. Seeing that I couldn't find it, the Tomas guy busy enjoying the drama as he filmed my reactions said " Page 30 and page 25".
"Thank you", I said as I swiftly turned those pages. A yearly salary of exactly 1.700 million and five years' worth of salary would be paid upfront. There is even more, with each year that my adopted child successfully graded, I would be given a bonus from 200k to 500k and if the child successfully entered university depending on the university he gets in, I would get another bonus from one million to above it.
Yes, my adopted child. Now that everything is signed, why would I make things difficult by trying to deny it? I'm not the least enticed by the sweet 2 million a year. I'm Grandfather Bright's prideful granddaughter. I will not bow to money...
"So, when will the money be in my bank account, Grandpa James?" My voice shook from thrill and it's all that oldies fault for not showering me with money like he did for his other grandchildren. I will cherish money...
"What? Grandpa!??, You shameless child don't even call me grandpa! Do you want my villa? Dream on.." Grandfather Miracle's voice came from the chairman's phone on the desk as he chuckled and ended the call. A call I didn't even know was ongoing.
"You can check your account right now, granddaughter!" he said, giving a kind smile that was the opposite of what I had seen of him during the day.
"You can come back next week to receive the adoption documents and Lucas.", he said as he stood up from his chair and went to the door. Before leaving the door, he stopped and looked back.
"I'm leaving the country right after, so make sure you are on time!" " Good work Tomas! Don't stay long!"
" You too James!", the Mr. Kim guy who probably was only playing around to make me nervous, answered with a smile.
"Follow me, child! Thanks to you, I had a fun time. I will give you a ride!" said Mr. Kim, chuckling.
"Sure, then I will be in your care, sir, "I answered with a polite smile. It is rude to refuse kind gestures, even more so, if it comes from Grandfather's rich friends.
Like that, I had the most smooth ride of my life. His car was a gorgeous black Lamborghini. A car model worth way more than all my body organs together.
On the road, I figured as I had suspected; he wasn't the secretary but the vice president and Mr. King's business partner, who had volunteered to have fun teasing and intimidating his old friend's granddaughter.
Another thing that I found out was that from the beginning, I was the only applicant and all the others were fake. He also added that Chairman King wouldn't leave his grandchild just to anyone, besides the grantee from my grandfather. He had investigated me thoroughly and found me to be trustworthy and capable.
According to Grandpa Kim, he wanted me to call him that and even gave me his business card and a red envelope. The child's parents had died in a car accident when he was only two years old. Since then, Chairman King has been taking care of him. Now, because of business and family matters, he couldn't look after the child himself. Either could leave him to his other children, which is why I deemed the best choice he could find.
Even though he was vague about it, I already guessed what complication types arose in their family. After all, my family and relatives were a complete package of conflicts.
Grandpa Kim was easy to get along with. Thanks to him, even I, who am not good with new people, had a comfortable ride home.
Not long after, it was the end of the week and I was in Grandfather Miracle's office. In front of his group of lawyers.
