A few scattered streetlights cast small circles of light. The lights were already dim, and the greyish lampshades further muted them, leaving the entire neighborhood shrouded in darkness. Most areas were pitch black. The deep night was silent, without even the sound of crickets, leaving only the cold wind to produce a low moaning as it passed through the short trees. No one noticed a shadow quickly flit along the building's wall, disappearing into the window of a house.

Scarlett lay in bed, sleeping fitfully. Occasionally, she would move slightly. The small bedside lamp next to her was gently turned on, casting light directly onto her face.
