The next morning, the sunlight filtering through the curtains of my room brought a glimmer of hope into the darkness of my tormented thoughts. I was still lost in a sea of doubt and fear, wondering whether I should believe Donovan's comforting words or listen to Visha's silent warnings.
When the doorbell rang, I was surprised to see Donovan appear at my door, a huge bouquet of flowers in his hand. His usual smile was tinged with a glimmer of uncertainty as he awkwardly attempted to mend the cracks that had grown between us.
-I'm really sorry about last night, my love, he began, holding the bouquet towards me with a pleading look, I would never hurt you. Please believe me, nothing happened
His tone was sincere, but I couldn't help but feel a pang of distrust deep in my heart. Before I could respond, Visha slipped up behind him, a warm but enigmatic smile stretching her lips.
-hello, my dear, she said in a soft voice, her eyes staring at me with an intensity that made me shiver.
-Don't worry, Donovan is sincere. He loves you more than anything in the world
His statement seemed reassuring, but something in his eyes made me wince. Was it sincerity or was there something darker hiding behind his encouraging words?
I suddenly remembered the rumors that swirled around Visha, gossip about how she liked to sow discord and manipulate those around her.
And yet, despite these silent warnings, part of me desperately wanted to believe Donovan's version.
I shook my head, banishing my doubts as quickly as they came.
-Thank you, Visha, but I think everything is fine. Donovan and I need to work this out between us
She nodded with an enigmatic smile, but her eyes seemed to shine with a disturbing gleam. As Donovan took me in his arms, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. Maybe everything would be okay after all.
But even then, a little voice deep inside me continued to whisper, reminding me that appearances could be deceiving and that trust was a fragile thing, easily broken.
And despite my efforts to stifle these doubts, I knew they wouldn't go away easily.
A few days later
The days that followed were a test of patience and fragile trust. Donovan did his best to allay my fears, showering me with attention and tender gestures. Yet despite his efforts, a shadow of doubt lingered in my mind, fueled by the disturbing memories of that night when the truth seemed to dissolve into darkness.
Visha continued to appear unexpectedly, her visits more and more frequent, her words always tinged with gentleness and compassion.
But every time she looked at me, her eyes seemed to burn with a strange fire, as if she was hiding something darker behind her mask of kindness.
I felt trapped in a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, torn between the need to believe in Donovan and the lingering fear that it was all a fragile mirage, destined to collapse under the weight of the truth.
Then, one evening, when Donovan pretended to have to work late, I decided to visit Visha, looking for answers to my burning questions. She greeted me with a warm smile, but there was something different in her gaze this time, something hard and cold that made me shiver despite the heat of the room.
-I'm glad you came, my dear, she said softly, inviting me to sit next to her.
-There's something you need to know about Donovan
My heart sank with apprehension as I listened intently, my hands clenched in a knot of nervousness.
What could she possibly have to say about my fiancé? And above all, could I trust him?
Suddenly, the door burst open, revealing Visha's father, a stern expression on his face.
-Visha, are you still talking nonsense?, he asked in a firm voice, his eyebrows furrowed.
Visha looked down, her shoulders hunching slightly.
-I...I'm just telling the truth, Dad.
His father shook his head with an annoyed sigh.
-Don't talk nonsense and go to your room now
She obeyed without a word, throwing one last glance in my direction before disappearing into the hallway. His father then turned to me, an amused smile stretching his lips.
-Don't listen to her, she's always had a lot of imagination, he said lightly before adding, you should avoid hanging out with her, it's not good company.
At deep inside me, a little voice whispered to me that perhaps there were some elements of truth in Visha's words.
She had managed to sow the seed of doubt in me once again.
