Affection

Emily's POV

I had to muster up my confidence for the event. I acted like I wasn't fazed by what was happening, focused on completing my task and leaving afterward. Ethan confirmed everything; I was here on a job to pretend to people. It stung that he accepted that this was my job like I wasn't worthy of love; it was like a business transaction. It was. I had to fulfill it, I just need Olivia to be back.

 I was tired.

I was exhausted from longing for someone my heart desires, who unfortunately doesn't feel the same way. I'm tired of gazing into captivating eyes that show no interest in me. I was drained from resisting the temptation of an unrequited and forbidden attraction.

I noticed Ethan's body language tense up as his mom spoke to him. Her plastered smile seemed more for the benefit of those around them than genuine, and I sensed the conversation wasn't going well. Despite her outward appearance of praise, her words seemed to be upsetting Ethan.
