Incredulous

Emily's POV

"Juice would be lovely, thank you," I replied, sinking into the plush couch and feeling the soft cushions envelop me as I let out a weary sigh.

Maria returned promptly with a refreshing cup of juice, which I gratefully gulped down, feeling the cool liquid revive me slightly as I struggled to shake off the exhaustion.

She was about to head back, but I called out to her. "How's your grandma feeling?" I asked.

Maria turned around, a warm smile spreading across her face. "She's doing much better, ma'am," she replied, her eyes lighting up with gratitude. "The doctor says she's on the mend, and we're all very relieved."

"Oh, that's good news," I replied. "Maria, can I ask you something?" I said, my eyes locked intently on hers.

"Of course, ma'am," she replied.

"I've told you many times, please call me Emily," I said, my voice calm, to make her feel at ease.
