Chapter 18: Shadows of the Past

Max found himself standing in the dimly lit alleyway behind Crane's mansion, the stench of decay mingling with the acrid smoke of his own thoughts. Luther's offer hung heavy in the air, a tangled web of opportunity and danger that Max couldn't shake.

He paced back and forth, the rhythm of his footsteps a staccato beat against the pavement. Every fiber of his being screamed at him to reject Luther's help—to trust no one but himself in a city where betrayal lurked around every corner.

But the truth was, Max was running out of options. Crane was too powerful, his influence too pervasive. If he wanted to bring him down, he needed all the help he could get—even if it meant making a deal with the devil himself.

As Max wrestled with his inner demons, a sound caught his attention—a soft footfall, barely audible over the hum of the city. He tensed, his hand instinctively reaching for the revolver at his side as he spun around to face the source of the noise.

But instead of an enemy, Max found himself face to face with Elena Voss, her eyes red-rimmed and her expression haunted.

"Elena," Max breathed, the name a prayer and a curse all at once.

She stepped closer, her gaze locked with his in a silent plea for forgiveness. "Max, I need to talk to you. Please."

Max hesitated, the weight of their shared history heavy in the space between them. But he couldn't deny her, couldn't turn away from the one person who had stood by him through it all.

"Alright," he relented, his voice softening despite himself. "But make it quick."

Elena took a deep breath, her hands trembling at her sides. "I... I know I messed up, Max. I know I betrayed your trust, and I can't ever make that right. But I need you to know that I never stopped caring about you, about us."

Max's heart clenched at her words, a mixture of anger and longing warring within him. "What do you want from me, Elena? Forgiveness? Absolution?"

Elena shook her head, her eyes brimming with tears. "No, Max. I just want you to know the truth. About everything."

Max's brow furrowed, suspicion gnawing at the edges of his consciousness. "What truth?"

Elena took a step closer, her voice barely a whisper. "About Victor Kane, about the experiments. About why I did what I did."

Max's breath caught in his throat, his pulse quickening with a mixture of dread and anticipation. He had spent so long searching for answers, for closure. And now, it seemed, they were standing right in front of him.

"Tell me," Max urged, his voice hoarse with emotion.

Elena took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. And then, in a voice that trembled with the weight of the truth, she began to speak.
