Celia felt dizzy as she struggled to make sense of the odd phrase. Her ears felt like they'd been stopped up with honey, making everything around her sound slow and muffled. "What…what is this…?"

Both men continued to pay her no attention, their gazes locked in a battle of wills.

Maybe they've completely forgotten I'm even here.

"When did you find out the truth?" Lucas asked dully. There was resignation on his face but no shock.

"Father told me on his deathbed. The poor son of a bitch was struck by a guilty conscience." Tobin said with a gruff laugh. "I didn't even know he had a conscience! But I guess that can happen when a man knows he's about to meet his maker and is carrying some heavy sins on his soul.

"I asked him what the fuck he expected me to do with the knowledge. What did he think was going to gain by telling me? And do you know what the old fool said?"
