Chapter 55: Born into a Poor Family (Part 1)

The day before New Year's Eve, Cen Ye didn't wake up until noon and found himself feeling, strangely enough, that this was the most comfortable homecoming he had had in years.

His brother and sister-in-law had already come over from the hotel and were watching TV in the living room, while his father had stepped out. Cen Ye wandered into the kitchen and saw his mother squatting on the floor, washing vegetables. Looking at her stooped and frail figure, his heart ached, yet he also felt warmth. Without further ado, he pulled her up from the floor and said, "Mom, I have something for you."

His mother was somewhat reluctant: "Wait a minute, you child, let me finish washing the vegetables first."

"What's the rush for."

"We need to prepare the New Year's Eve dinner."

Cen Ye took out a wad of cash from his pocket and handed it to her. His mother was stunned, and Cen Ye smiled. The winter sun shone warmly on them, and a silent moment between mother and son suddenly ensued.
