The competition format for this time had similarities with previous variety shows, yet also had its differences.
Since preliminary selections and warm-ups had already been conducted in major regions, only the top twenty national contestants had entered the finals. Thus, the first round was an intense battle from 20 to 10. There were no build-ups, no buffers, no unnecessary stage appearances—all direct, brutal competition.
First, every band performed a song on stage, and three top judges scored the performance. If all three judges gave positive reviews, the band became what was known as a "three-select band," temporarily moving into the top ten nationwide. But it was only temporary.
Moreover, following the same pattern were "two-select bands" and "single-select bands". Yet none were eliminated at this point.
