Chapter XIX: The First Crime Followed by Punishment

 

The crowd began to applaud the decision of punishment that I had made. In a way, I felt good to be of assistance to the welfare of the Church. Now, nothing reminds us of that tyrannical and bloody ruler, except for some legends about him.

As soon as I gave the verdict, we all headed towards the execution site. The citizens of the capital, guided by a holy zeal, brought wood and old furniture items to burn the witch.

The happiest among all those present was the bishop, who, since he heard the verdict, had told me dozens of times how good and holy I am.

It feels extraordinary to condemn someone. Finally, I hold absolute power in the Church of Wallachia... But still... Something feels strange... Maybe the fact that I condemned an innocent woman to death?

"Any last words, Ana?" I said before they lit the fire.

"You won't get away with this so easily, Antonio... Can you hear me?"
