Chapter CXI: To Be or Not to Be in Love  

Well, usually any confession ends with a penance, but that penance I will only apply to the Pope, considering that he is the most guilty of all the irregularities that occurred a year ago. And I know exactly what penance I could offer a Pope as proud as he is...

"Holy Father, the penance I will give you will be simple. I only ask that you grant me total access to all documents and all places in the Papal State, as well as authority to do whatever I deem necessary to reform the Church. I think it would be a good idea, and thus Your Holiness will be remembered as a reforming Pope."

The Pope looked at me in astonishment for a few moments, and after leaning back on the chair he was sitting on, he agreed. The Pope's verbal agreement will have to be supported by a written agreement, which will take place tomorrow through a document that will be signed by him and the vice-chancellor, namely Cardinal Sforza.
