Chapter 4 - Tension in the pack

The night hung heavy around the Shadow Fang Pack's home, and the moon was a pale crescent in the sky.

Declan and Elara withdrew to the privacy of their abode, hoping for a brief break from the troubles that engulfed their pack.

A tiny bonfire within the room gave forth a pleasant glow that made the walls dance with shadows.

Elara settled onto a bed of soft fur, her mind still troubled by Adrian's cryptic visit before.

Declan paced back and forth; his Alpha instincts restless. He couldn't shake the feeling that something alarming was brewing, hanging on to the fragile peace they had fought so hard to maintain.

" I don't trust Adrian," Elara raised her voice, breaking the silence that hung between them.

Declan broke mid-stride, his gaze locking with hers." Neither do I," he admitted, his voice painted with frustration." But we cannot afford to underestimate him.

" Elara nodded in agreement, her eyes reflecting determination." What do you suppose he's on to?" she asked, her voice a tale.

Declan's jaw strained, his mind contending with possibilities.

" Adrian has always craved power," he replied, his voice low." I can swear he's planning something that could destroy us all.

" As they spoke, a rustling outside the den caught their attention.

Declan's senses burned, every instinct egging caution. He moved swiftly towards the entrance, Elara at his side.

A figure surfaced from the shadows, causing Declan to tense. It was Liam, his devout aide, whose expression was grim.

" Alpha," Liam addressed Declan with urgency." Something just happened."

Declan's heart skipped a beat." What happened?" he demanded; his voice edged with concern.

Liam's gaze fluttered to Elara shortly before returning to Declan." Mara and Jaxon, they've gone missing," he explained, his voice strained.

Elara's eyes widened in alarm, the counter allegations sinking in.

" Could it be Adrian?" she asked, her voice tight with solicitude.

Declan's jaw gripped, his mind contending with the possibilities." It's too soon to jump to conclusions," he replied, his voice steady despite the rising apprehension.

Without another word, Declan turned to Liam.

" Gather a quest party," he instructed, his tone decisive." We need to find them before it's too late.

" Liam pumped, his expression grave." Right down, Alpha," he replied before fading into the night. Left alone with Elara, Declan's mind turned inward.

He couldn't shake the feeling that their pack was being torn piecemeal from within, and Adrian's shadow brewed over them like a dark pall.

Elara moved closer to Declan, her presence a source of comfort amidst the query. "

We'll find them," she assured him, her voice filled with unwavering support.

Declan looked into her eyes, with a sense of determination in his eyes." We've to," he replied, his voice resolute.

As the den fell into silence formerly more, the weight of their arrears hung heavy in the air.

Declan knew that they were on the point of a dangerous battle, and the stakes had no way been advanced.

Little did they know that the true pitfall lay nearer than they could have imagined, hidden in the shadows of their own pack. The coming day formed with an air of palpable pressure moping over the Shadow Fang Pack.

Declan convened a meeting with his trusted soldiers, their expressions reflecting the state of the situation at hand.

" We must act fast," Declan addressed the soldiers, his voice fostering." Mara and Jaxon's exposure cannot go unanswered." Liam, ever pious and fraudulent, stepped forward.

" Alpha, we've combed the near homes, but there's no sign of them," he reported, his tone edged with concern.

Declan's jaw strained, frustration stewing beneath his stoic facade." Keep searching," he instructed, his voice unwavering." They cannot have disappeared without a trace.

" As the soldiers dispersed to renew their quest, Elara approached Declan with a determined glint in her eyes.

" We need answers," she urged, her voice unwavering. Declan nodded, his gaze moping on Elara with admiration.

." I'll not rest until we find them," he pledged, with determination seen in his eyes.

Meanwhile, whispers of uneasiness circulated among the pack members. Rumors were carried around, casting distrust and suspicion over Adrian's intentions.

That evening, as the moon rose grandly in the sky, Declan and Elara ventured into the heart of the forest, seeking solace in each other's company amidst the chaos.

" I swear Adrian may be behind this," Elara raised her voice, her tone soft yet filled with conviction.

Declan's expression darkened, his jaw tightening with resoluteness." still, he'll answer for it," he replied," If he's responsible.

" As they walked, an unanticipated howl in the distance startled them both. Declan's instincts burned, every sense on high alert.

Out from the darkness stepped Thorne, a cunning and opportunistic pack member aligned with Adrian. His eyes lustered with malignancy as he blocked their path.

" Well, well, well. However," Thorne said, his voice trickling with misprision, if it is not the fearless Alpha and his precious mate.

Declan's gaze narrowed, his posture tense." What do you want, Thorne?" he demanded, his voice establishing authority.

Thorne's grin widened, his gaze fluttering toward Elara." I'm just delivering a message," he replied cryptically." Adrian has his eye on you, Alpha.

"Elara bristled, her fur standing on end." We'll not be bullied by your games," she said to him, her voice recalcitrant. Thorne chortled darkly, his eyes glinting with recreation.

" Oh, it's not a game, my dear Luna," he teased." Adrian will make his move soon enough.

" With a final snicker, Thorne dissolved into the darkness, leaving Declan and Elara to consider his portentous words.

" We need to be watchful," Declan said, his voice low and urgent.

However, we cannot let our guard down," If Adrian is planning something." Elara nodded, her eyes surveying the girding trees." I will raise alarm and make sure everyone is on high alert.

" Declan nodded, his mind contending with strategies and counter measures." I will meet with the elders and see if we can gather any further information about Adrian's plans.

" As they continued their walk, the pressure between them was palpable. They knew that they were walking a thin line, and one wrong move could spell disaster for the pack. Suddenly, a faint rustling sound came from a near copse.

Declan and Elara changed a cautious stare, their instincts on high alert.

" What was that?" Elara rumored; her voice slightly audible.

Declan's eyes narrowed; his cognizance perked up." I am not sure, but I do not like it.

" Without another word, he moved fleetly towards the cops, Elara by his side. As they approached, the rustling grew louder, and they could make out the shape of a figure huddled on the ground.

" Who is there?" Declan demanded, his voice establishing authority.

The figure sluggishly looked up, revealing a youthful pack member, her eyes wide with fear. "A-Alpha," she stuttered," I- I was out hunting and saw something strange.

A group of wolves, they had strange markings on their fur.

" Declan's expression darkened." What kind of markings? " The youthful pack member dithered, her eyes zipping around nervously.

" I- I do not know, Alpha. But they looked evil." Elara's grip on Declan's arm tensed." We need to probe this farther," she rumored urgently.

Declan nodded, his mind contending with the counter accusations." Gather the elders and meet me at the den. We will get to the bottom of this.

" As they turned to leave, the youthful pack member called out, her voice slightly audible.

"A-Alpha? I think they are coming for us." As they returned to the den, Declan's mind contended with the counter accusations of the strange markings.

He knew that Adrian's pack was known for their cunning act and ruthlessness, but this was something different.

The markings sounded like some kind of dark magic, and Declan's instincts told him that it was a warning sign.

Back at the den, Declan gathered the elders and told them about the information they had gotten. The room went silent as they digested the news, their faces grave with concern.

" We need to probe this farther," Declan said, " I want one of you to track down the wolves with the markings and gather further information.

We cannot let our guard down until we know what we are up against." The elders nodded in agreement, and a pack member was quickly assigned to carry out the charge.

Declan and Elara led the pack, their senses on high alert as they ventured into the unknown.

As they tracked the wolves, they noticed that the markings sounded to be some kind of crooked symbol, etched into the fur of the wolves.

It looked like a blend of ancient languages, and Declan's instincts told him that it was a dark and potent magic.

After hours of shadowing, they eventually came upon a clearing, and what they saw made their blood run cold wave.

A group of wolves, all bearing the crooked symbol, stood in a circle, their eyes glowing with an unearthly light.

In the center of the circle stood Adrian, his eyes flashing with nastiness.

" Welcome, Declan," he sniggered." I have been waiting for you." Declan growled; his hackles raised." What kind of dark magic is this, Adrian? You know this is interdicted." Adrian chortled, his voice trickling with malignancy." interdicted? Ha!

This is the key to our power, Declan. And soon, we'll be the bones ruling over the packs.

" Without another word, the wolves attacked, their eyes blazing with an unnatural fury.

Declan and his pack fought back, but they were outnumbered and excelled.

Just when it sounded like all was lost, Elara let out a potent roar, and a blast of energy took down the attacking wolves flying.

Declan took advantage of the reprieve, striking back with all his muscle.

The battle was violent, but in the end, Declan and his pack came out victorious.

Adrian and his pack were forced to retreat, their dark magic temporarily baffled.

As they returned to the den, Declan knew that this was far from over. Adrian would not stop until he'd achieved his thing, and Declan was determined to stop him.

The pack was on high alert now, their senses heightened as they waited for the coming attack.

Declan and Elara patrolled the borders, their eyes surveying the horizon for any sign of danger. And also, just as they allowed, they had a moment's peace, a nipping howl echoed through the forest, transferring jitters down their backbones.

The war between the packs had begun, and Declan and Elara were ready to fight for their pack's survival.
