Chapter 16 The crown

" Your majesty, we have a word about the situation in Kent territory. The son of the count rebelled against his father with legitimate reason."

King Edward fell into silence while tapping the table with an annoyed expression. His lazy eyes were glued on the map, thinking something in his mind while rubbing his finger.

" The southern territory is an important hold for both trading and military. I won't allow them to be chaotic under my rules. Hence, dispatch a royal knight to them and give me a valid reason for this rebellion.

If they do not give me an answer in 7 suns, I shall quench their thirst with my iron fist."

The king was by no means a fool. In his eyes, incompetence was an unacceptable thing as a monarch and he hated incompetence the most after having a rough childhood.

" Duke of Wales will surely try to contact the new ruler of Kent. We must hasten our movement and bring them to our side, my liege.

Having one ally is better than having one enemy. I believe the new lord of Kent offers us something valuable for his title and legitimacy as long as we play along with him."

The noble bowed his head with a calm face while expressing his desire to befriend Uther who took the southern territory with force. To his eyes, this place was an important point in the south because not only this territory have an ample chance of growth, but they were close to the mainland.

" Indeed, your words are wise but I am a monarch of this country and my words are absolute.

Whether it is Kent or Wales, they have to bow their heads before me until I withdraw my last breath. However, I will heed your words and offer them a chance to be useful.

If they can show me their usefulness, maybe as you said I could use them against the Duke of Wales or perhaps even against Franks."

The king waved his hand to gesture to the servant who was standing next to him. The servant knelt in front of the king with a map in his palm while Edward took the map.

He then unscrolled the map, looking at the main connection between the isles and the mainland while thinking deeply inside his head. The northern region of Franks is heavily guarded against them but that didn't mean they were undefeated.

Meanwhile in the castle of Duke Wales

The Duke was an old man who lived his life with various achievements. He was a legendary man among his people to achieve the recognition of the king while maintaining peace between the people.

However, he wasn't an ambitionless person. He was an old tiger who was eyeing for a young tender meat to devour to achieve his ultimate dream.

" My lord, it is too risky. If the crown knows about our movement, we might become their enemy.

Our army can't win against the powerful army of the king with these equipments. They would slaughter us like a herd in the fields."

The earl tried to persuade the old man but he didn't budge a bit except for looking at Kent territory.

To his eyes, this territory was the best place to connect themselves to Frank King and forge a peace treaty to get their freedom but there was a slight problem.

" Essex. I know the new lord of Kent is a just man and he will definitely listen to my words if I am reasonable. But the lord of Essex is different.

He is a hard-core supporter of the crown and he is keeping his eyes on our Welsh people."

He tapped the table with his finger while leaning on the chair. The words of his advisors flew through his mind while he kept thinking.

They had neither money nor people to support Kent from behind and certainly, he needed a bargaining chip.

" What about marriage, my lord? I heard the young lord of Kent's new lord is single and we can use your granddaughter to have a relationship with them."

Old duke's eyes glowed brighter after hearing his words as he ran through his mind. The point was whether she would accept it or not but it was worth trying.
