Nick was still in shock at what he had just seen. Immediately after he had written his name, the book responded?
He had written 'Nicholas Barclay' at the top and right below a message appeared.
[Hello Nicholas Barclay, it's nice to finally meet you]
Was what was now written on the book in a plain, simple handwriting. He scratched his eyes and blinked twice agian hoping that the message would go away. But again, it didn't.
Nick turned towards Selene again but instead looking in her direction something else caught his eye. Perched on the windowsill, a black cat was closely watching him. They kept staring at each other, almost as if to see who would blink first.
In her peripheral vision, Selene noticed him staring in her direction. She turned to him and asked, "what? Do I have something on my face?"
He just pointed towards the window. She turned her head towards the window and saw a cat sitting there staring at them.
Seeing a cat on your windowsill in class isn't really normal even in this day and age. However, it doesn't help the fact that class 3A is on the third floor of Oak Tree Academy. And to make matters worse, that's the same cat Nick saw in his room before he left. Or atleast he thought.
"Huh, weird" he said.
At first Selene thought 'Awwww, how cute'. Then the realisation hit her 'wait but how?'.
The bell signalling the end of morning classes then rang. However what the cat now did was what made it much more weirder. It got up, moved its tail a bit, glanced at them then jumped off. That wasn't the weird part. Well ofcourse the height was a little dangerous but it looked like it landed on something inches below the windowsill. But beneath it was nothing but air that slightly rippled. It jumped again and landed on air inches below its previous position. It continued its descent in a similar manner. As if hoping down invisible stairs.
With the coming of the worms were some abilities. These abilities were however only granted to humans. The only animals with such abilities were found in the worms and these animals were considered beasts.
"How did a beast end up on campus?" Selene asked staring at the spot where the cat turned a corner and disappeared. She then turned to him, "We have to tell someone. Beasts with such abilities are considered to be high tier, this could be dangerous." She said.
Surprisingly, Nick was a little against the idea, "No one's gonna believe us, besides it hasn't yet done anything," he said hoping to change her mind. He didn't know why but he felt drawn to the cat. Like it was sort of calling him. But he couldn't just tell her that.
"Well, I think it's better to avoid it doing anything before it does actually hurt someone," she said now packing her books.
Nick now slightly panicking, grabbed her arm a little too tightly. She looked at him irritated. But all she could see was herself in his eyes. His eyes were now so silvery they were almost like a mirror. She froze.
"You need to calm down. Just stay quiet, I'll handle it," he said in a commanding tone. He instantly regretted it, 'That was too far,' he thought.
But surprisingly, Selene gave a slight nod. In her point of view, his eyes were reflecting her actions. As if blaming her that if something bad happened it'd be her fault. But then again there was something comforting about his eyes that made her agree. And before she knew it she was already leaving the classroom, having already agreed to keep her mouth shut. She turned back to look at him before leaving the class. He was still staring at her, but just a normal stare, like they had just had a pleasant conversation.
'There is something wrong with this guy' she thought, 'he's dangerous.'
Nick only started packing his books when Selene had left. As he watched her go, he wondered what had changed in him. It wasn't a subtle, gradual change it was a full 180. He felt like a completely different person. He he was all over the place physically, mentally and emotionally. It scared him a little. How can one change so much in just one night. Pushing those thoughts out of his mind, he got up and left the classroom. He went to his locker and put his books. Immediately after closing it he saw a black tail turn a corner.
'That cat,' he thought, 'It's there.'
Following it he turned the corner to the next hallway. He saw it again turn another. He looked at some students casually walking and talking. No one else seemed to notice it. He followed it and immediately he saw it again turning another corner. So he followed and then it turned another and another again until it entered a room.
He quickly walked up the the door which was labelled 'Men's'.
"The bathroom," he muttered.
He opened the door and stepped in noticing three other boys he regretted ever following the cat. One stood leaning on the wall to his right next to the mirrors with his hands in his pocket, another sat on the sink in the middle of the three and the last stood leaning on the wall opposite him. Turning around he planned to make a quick exit, but ofcourse the boys had different plans. As these three boys were Lucas, Edward and Adrian.
These were the boys that made Nicholas Barclay's life a living hell. Edward, who was on his right was now smirking. His hands were no longer in his pockets, they were folded across his chest.
"Hey, not so fast, calm down we were just about to leave," Edward said.
"Ohh wow would you look at that. Speak of the devil," Lucas said,"We were just talking about you Nick."
Nick turned around to face them. He knew things were about to get dirty. He could hear his thunderous heartbeat in his head. Making him barely able to think but his eyes darted across the three boys taking in the information before him.
Lucas whispered something to Adrian then got off the sink and began walking slowly towards Nick. Adrian, who had the House of Rain's ability which is to manipulate water, opened all the taps. Using his ability he forced the water to move faster. Water began to overflow from the sinks and started to flood the room.
"During class, I noticed you got all chummy with sel," Lucas said pausing after each sentence,"I'm sure you know where this is going, you're pretty smart. So, just stay away from her, okay?"
"Who?" Nick asked tilting his head back.
"Selene," Edward said.
"Now, the House of Sky possess an incredibly versatile ability," Lucas explained while smiling pleasantly as if talking to his best friend, " it can be paired with almost any other ability with different applications."
Looking down Nick realised the kind of danger he was in. The water was now at almost at ankle height, he could feel his socks getting wet as it sipped into his loafers. Then suddenly his instincts and every nerve in his body was shouting at him to dodge. The hairs all over his body stood. He looked up and saw a smiling Lucas with a large lightning bolt in his hand.
'It's even bigger than usual, I can't dodge,' Nick thought.
Lucas threw the lightning bolt at Nick. It hit him square in the chest. He flew back and hit the door the fell forwards. Nick only saw white, his chest burning, the rest of his body was numb and he could only hear a ringing in his ears.
Satisfied, Lucas was about to leave but Nick grabbed his leg and looked at him with the most silvery eyes Lucas or anyone in the room had ever seen and said in hoarse voice, "that tickled, seems like you're losing your edge."
"What did you say?" Lucas asked but not quite to Nick but mostly to the room.
"I said you're weak," Nick said slowly but stronger than before.
Burning with anger, Lucas conjured a large lightning bolt bigger and brighter than the previous one and threw it directly into Nick's face. He made another one of similar size and threw it at his back and another at his leg and another at his arm he continued until Edward stopped him.
"Enough, are you trying to kill him?" Edward said sternly grabbing Lucas' arm.
Shrugging him off, Lucas stormed out of the room splashing water everywhere. Water which was now beginning to turn red. As Edward left the room he only had one thought.
'Those eyes.'
