The abandoned water treatment plant loomed like a concrete skeleton against the night sky. Chain-link fences topped with razor wire surrounded the complex, but Nathaniel led them to a section where the fence had rusted through, creating a narrow opening.
"The maintenance tunnel is just past those storage tanks," he whispered, pointing to a series of massive cylindrical structures silhouetted against the moonlight. "We'll need to move quietly."
Bruce went first, his wolf-enhanced senses scanning for any potential threats. Mishka followed, with Nathaniel bringing up the rear, a small handheld device blinking softly in his hand.
"Frequency detector," he explained when Mishka glanced back. "It'll warn us if there are any unusual electromagnetic signatures."
The device suddenly chirped, a low, urgent pulse that made Mishka's skin prickle. "Something's here," she murmured.
