Preparing for Monique's release

Darcelle had to get herself ready for tomorrow afternoon when she would carry the child out of the gate in an overnight bag. The night nurse would be on her way to take over Monique's supervision, but she always arrived a few minutes late. So, Monique was usually on her own for about half an hour while the night nurse took her time about taking over.

“Hopefully she’ll be as late as usual tomorrow as well,” Darcelle told herself before walking out of the nursery to get herself some tea for her break. There were enough toys around Monique to keep her occupied.

In the library, Darcelle read through the list of instructions on her phone again.

“Can I really do it? What if one of François’ men catches me just as I leave?” she asked herself as she sat on a chair.

“But it will be even worse if the police caught me and arrested me along with François,” she told herself.
