Changes .

The palace library was a massive wooden based work of architecture. Huge dome shaped windows let in large amounts of sunlight that lit up every corner . The glossy floor allowed some of the light to be reflected off , brightening up the dull appearances of the wooden chairs and tables set in rows for readers to use after they had selected a book from the shelves mounted along the walls. At the far corner of the library , opposite the main entrance , was a beautiful spiral staircase that led up the first floor of the library . There was no ceiling separating the two , and but for the wooden railing meant to keep people from falling off into the ground floor , one could basically see everything that was going on up there.

Because of this , it took Hazel no time to spot Lan leaning on the railing up on the first floor reading a book quietly .

" When someone officiates you're wedding , you'd think the last thing a normal person would do is send them to prison," she started , quickly making her way to the staircase . Her voice was slightly tainted with anger.

" I know Priestess Agar was a close family friend of yours , " Lan folded the page he was reading to mark it then closed the book and placed it on a table near him. He pulled up a chair next to the same table , sat down and invited Hazel to do the same .

" Forgive my unruly attitude prince Lan , it's just that priestess Agar was more than just another noble to me . As a child when my father went off in his duties as minister of finance , she was the one who took care of me. I knew her personally and she is not someone who would break the law . So you can imagine how shocked I was when I heard that you sent out orders for her to be arrested and locked up in the dungeons, " Hazel forced herself to cool down as she sat down opposite Lan .

" The kingdom of Agreya is divided into five provinces , I want you to focus on the southern one ," Lan reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a rolled map which he expertly unfolded and lay on the table for Hazel to look at . Not understanding where he was leading her to , she remained quiet and waited for him to continue.

" Marrying you last week saved me from loosing the kingdom as it allowed me to access your family's gold which I used to pay off some of the crown's debts. But that is only temporary and in less than two months we will be right back here where we started . So I started asking myself why that was the so, leading me directly to the southern province ," he tapped on it with his index finger.

" What you're saying is sounds very serious and all but how is Agar connected to it ? She's just a priestess Lan and you are wrong in sending her to prison" Hazel was again running out of composure .

" And you would have been right if you said that an hour ago because I have just told the director of the guards to stop looking for her . They never even got to arrest her in the first place, " Lan chose to first calm her frustration before he could continue with what he was saying.

Hazel was again confused , " You mean she is no longer a fugitive? Lan you have to understand that priestess Agar is a person of high social status , you can't just order that she be arrested and then change your mind the next minute. It sounds absurd and she is bound to seek retribution. The crown is already in a weak enough situation as it is and you are here just casually making more enemies."

Lan tried not to react to the concealed insult and instead reached back into his coat pocket and pulled out a letter this time wrapped in a golden ribbon. After unsealing it , Hazel was a little surprised to see the name of the sender.

"This is a letter of gratitude from you're cousin Vivian Marjorie . She promises to pay me almost double the amount I got from you're father ," he explained and gave the curious Hazel the piece of paper .

" The Southern Province grows wheat , our kingdom's staple food. To reduce production costs , we allow the church to send in refugees as farmers who by law only get to be paid half the required salary . This as you know , is because our kingdom does not charge taxes on refugees , even the mandatory border tax when they cross into our nation.

Well turns out someone had the brilliant idea to use refugees as wheat smugglers . We are loosing over a million gold in tax revenue every single week this happens and the only reason the perpetrators haven't been caught is because of those refugees. My sources claim that they are eve not being searched as they cross simply because they have no monetary obligations , making them the perfect tools for the job.

Ordinarily , the best course of action would be to tax these guys , but international law has my hands tied. If I even hint at doing that , I'll be giving all the neighboring superpowers the reason they have been waiting for to pounce on us and take away everything .

So I had to resolve this problem without poking any beehives . The refugees in the south were moved over to the North where they are furthest from their markets . Your family has just earned itself a cheaper labor source to work the gold mines you hold . All I asked of Vivian , who is the current supervisor of the mines , is that she keeps them around for as long as possible to give me more time to work out the refugee problem. Knowing that the Church officials would loose a lot of money from this and would predictably try to oppose me , I decided to send them a message .Priestess Agar owns one of the largest wheat farms and was evidently one of the biggest earners from the scheme . The fact that she has not tried to retaliate all the more proves my point ," Finishing this , Lan stood up , took the book he was reading , and started leaving .

Hazel quickly digested all he had said before stopping before grabbing his hand to stop him. The moment she did this , a warm sensation stunned his heart . He unwillingly looked in her direction and met her face . Her beauty landed and his mind blanked , even though just for a second.

" If what you're saying is true , you may have secured more gold for the kingdoms reserves , but in doing so provoked the other kingdoms . They may not have a reason to act , but now they will be looking for one. You only have a short time to catch whoever started this whole thing and punish them ," she said , now sounding more supportive than prejudicial.

" That's why you need to let me go , I have a very short time to catch your father , " Lan shook his hand free and walked off , leaving Hazel standing dead still, not sure of what to do.
