When Maxwell opened the door, he saw a middle-aged man standing outside.
"Maxwell, I am the head of the Hudson family from Diego base city. Do you have a moment? I would like to have a word with you."
The middle-aged man said with a smile, and not only that, he was holding quite a few items in his hands, seemingly gifts for Maxwell.
However, Maxwell had absolutely no interest, and directly said, "Sorry, I'm busy."
After speaking, he promptly closed the door.
But it wasn't long before the doorbell rang again outside his room.
This time it was from the Shirley family.
In this post-apocalyptic world, the major powers are intricately complex. Although the base city appears harmonious on the surface, as a survival hub, its resources are actually controlled by a few major families. Some families even have the power to establish their own base cities.
Other forces consist purely of evolvers, like the well-known Martial Alliance.
The so-called evolvers are genetic warriors.
The Martial Alliance, being an alliance, naturally consists of different evolver powers combined. The forces include some menial workers, all of whom are evolvers, with the lowest level being awakeners.
As for powers like the Supreme Hall, Carline, despite having A-grade genetic potential, did not manage to get in, which made Maxwell think there must be some other reason. After all, A-grade is a very rare level, and it's unlikely that the Supreme Hall would set their standards at the once-in-a-century S-grade, right?
After the Hudson family, the Shirley family also did not fare any better, followed by a visit from every other family.
What a joke!
Maxwell had directly refused the Supreme Hall, so he was even less interested in the invitations from the smaller families of the minor Diego base city.
Maxwell was becoming immensely annoyed.
After some time had passed, the actual controllers of the base city appeared. Nowadays, each base city can be seen as an independent entity, a power capable of self-governance. The actual rulers of Diego base city were also a major family, although other families participated to some extent, it was still this major family that distributed the real benefits.
However, when Maxwell heard this, he only showed a slight courtesy before promptly making excuses to dismiss the conversation.
Maxwell decided to take advantage of the night to quickly leave the area, and not just that, he also planned to leave Diego base city.
Just in time, he had received a message from the mutated zombie. The mutated zombie had already gathered over a thousand zombies.
Maxwell was eager to enjoy playing with the system, and had no interest in dealing with these family powers.
The moon was bright that night, and the stars were brilliant. The moonlight, like water, slanted down and illuminated everything on the ground clearly.
After leaving the base city, Maxwell ran rapidly in one direction.
Beside him, followed the zombie little girl, Eva.
Eva was about the height of a seven or eight-year-old, only reaching up to Maxwell's waist. Compared to Maxwell, she was quite small, but her little legs ran surprisingly fast.
On the other side of Maxwell was the zombie young girl, Carline.
Maxwell, accompanied by the two zombies, ran for nearly two hours and arrived at a deserted village.
This village was currently crowded with over a thousand zombies.
Actually, the zombies around Diego base city were not numerous and were quite scattered. Previously, it would have been very difficult for the mutated zombie to gather over a thousand zombies in such a short time.
But this time, with the recent subsiding of the zombie tide, despite the command of the mutated zombie, the sheer number of ordinary zombies meant that stragglers were common. This resulted in many aimless, wandering zombies around Diego base city.
This situation made it much easier for Maxwell to gather zombies!
However, given Maxwell's current strength, he was still far from his goal. If he could directly take down the entire horde of over twenty thousand zombies, both Eva and Carline would certainly be able to advance another two to three levels!
As soon as Maxwell appeared in the village, the horde immediately reacted. Even with the mutated zombie exerting control, these zombies wouldn't simply submit to Maxwell's will.
Still, these higher-level zombies were only level 5, and no matter how much they struggled, they were no match for Maxwell. In less than two hours, Maxwell had eliminated all these zombies.
After the Fusion, Maxwell now had five somewhat higher-level zombies and several smaller ones.
Maxwell did a count.
Male zombies, he had three in total: one each of levels 10, 9, and 7. From levels 6 to 1, he had one of each.
Female zombies, he also had three: one each of levels 10, 8, and 4.
With this, Maxwell sent out the mutated zombie and all zombies level 7 and above again, instructing them to gather more zombies to bring back.
Maxwell also released Carline.
Now was a rare opportunity; with the mutated zombie just having led the zombie army away, and given the previous failed attack, they were likely to leave the area. The longer their journey, the more straggler zombies there would be. Maxwell intended to take this chance to gather more zombies.
Moreover, with his ability to see through the eyes of his zombies, if there was any danger, he could also warn Carline to leave quickly.
Thus, Carline was also sent out by Maxwell to gather zombies.
For a while, only Maxwell and Eva remained in the deserted village.
"Hello, Eva?" Maxwell waved at Eva.
"Eva, look at me!"
He now enjoyed amusing Eva from time to time, though for the most part, Eva didn't respond to him and would just stare blankly.
Eva seemed to have some level of consciousness, though it was perhaps equivalent to that of a two-year-old human child.
Of course, she was still different from a real two-year-old.
"Eva, on our way here, we passed a small river. Since we're not doing much now, let's go to the riverbank and I'll give you a bath. We left the base city in such a hurry that I forgot to bring a new set of clothes for you. I'll wash this set for you in a while; you'll have to make do for now," Maxwell said.
The river was very close, and they arrived in no time.
The water was shallow, only reaching up to the calves.
Maxwell took off his clothes and bathed himself first.
It had been seven or eight days since he had arrived, and he hadn't had a bath yet. Being able to do so now was incredibly refreshing for Maxwell!
However, as he was bathing, Maxwell noticed that Eva was staring at him continuously.
