Chapter 27: good news

'I still bake? What does he mean?"

Why did those people act like they all knew me from somewhere, whereas I knew, given my situation, that it was impossible.

I didn't understand them.

In fact, I didn't understand this entire world. Why were they like that. Acting like…like... I don't know. But I didn't understand.

My head was spinning, and I was at a loss for words. What was Mainu aiming at? Perhaps he had some kind of memory from the previous Georgia.

I stood up, shocked, looking at him, my mouth on the floor.

Under the panic and incertainity, I couldn't help but make big strides all around the room.

From time to time, I would turn back, making sure he was still there.

I must have looked out of my mind. And maybe I was.

'What, he is like a transgressor, something like... like me?'

No, Georgia, don't come to quick to conclusions.

You can't just straight-up ask him, and there is no other way to know. So you have to be smart on this one.

Think, think…

"What do you mean, Mainu. And answer truthfully."

"That you can still bake. Isn't that obviously just what I said?"

He looked genuinely confused, not understanding what had startled me so much.

'You see! It doesn't seem to be the case. It's okay.'

"And how do you know that?"

Finally calming myself, I asked him another question as I resumed my drinking, after regaining my seat. My hands were slightly trembling as I did so.

"Well, I saw it in your resume. The academic description you sent with your test aptitude when you signed up for this academy."

"Oh…!"

Finally, I understood everything! It was another of Ricardo's doings. He must have written all my personal activities, the legal ones, when he signed me without my consent. That idiot didn't think of preventing me.

'Ricardo! You are done for!' I thought as I gritted my teeth, containing my anger.

At least, it wasn't what I suspected it was. If that had been the case, it would have been disastrous.

Nobody could know I wasn't the original Georgia, and surely not Mainu.

This country, in fact the entire continent, had a very strict rule against possession: it was considered black magic and was one of the capital crimes-punished by the disciples of the churches.

And God knew how ruthless those later were. It would not only condemn you to instant death but also to eternal damnation. You would have no hope of ever reincarnating.

And nobody would believe me if I said I was for nothing in this. That I was innocent and had landed in this body without my consent. That I was, in fact, BORN in this body.

Moreover, I didn't know what kind of grudge Mainu had against the previous owner of this body or if he would use it against me. After all, he was described as an unscrupulous man, ready to do anything to satisfy his greed. He was a psychopath.

It would be better if he didn't know. I wouldn't want to risk Ricardo's life and mine, and I knew, as a matter of fact, that I couldn't win against him. Not that I was weaker, but the consequences would lead me to the same exact fate anyway.

It was hopeless.

"You seem to be still tired from your trip, Georgia. I will let you take a rest. Goodbye, dear."

The man, after having scrutened me enough, gave me a last glance before taking his leave, closing the door after him. As he left, the last image I saw was his bright, nearly white, blond hair and his still juvenile self.

"Goodbye," I whispered in the void.

Yes, Mainu was still a kid.

He hadn't gained his influence yet and may still be somewhat mentally stable. For now, he wasn't a threat, and he was not my main problem.

"Now, I have to write a letter to Ricardo. I will let him know how much scolding he will get when I come back home."

I got up, used magic to change into a night gown, and went to refresh myself first. I splashed some water into my face, scrubbing it thoughtfully, and used magic cleaning to cleanse the rest of my body, because I didn't have the courage to go take a bath right now. I would take one later.

Today, I planned to sleep the entire morning, only going to search for Sylvester by the end of the afternoon.

I dried my hand and put on my slippers, instantly feeling a lot more comfortable.

"Yes, the letter." I thought before pulling up a chair and sitting at my desk. I took out one piece of paper from the drawer and began to formulate for my brother what I wanted to say. Then I slipped the letter into the encompass, sealing it.

I fused magic into it to transport it to the nearest post office, since the law made it impossible for magicians to send it directly to the receiver. For the economy and equity, they said.

The moment the task was done, I got up and jumped into my bed, ready to meet Morpheus.

"Sweet dream, me!"

"Hummgh... A little more. Just a bit more, Marie."

-Toc-Toc-Toc

"Yes, yes...Yes."

I understood that it wasn't Marie , my personal servant, and that I had a visitor.

Couldn't they come at another time?'

I continued to mumble to myself while the person at my door was still waiting. I could hear the constant "Toc, toc, toc," but I didn't have the courage to get up and open.

"Aaaah, yes. That's right, I am still in the academy."

"AAAAaaeehhhhhh."

Screaming face in the pillow-my voice muffled by me—I waited a few more seconds before using magic to directly open the door. I was too lazy to get up.

"Enter, please…" I said, trailing my words.

"It's already time to go eat, little shrimp."

Aaron, just as handsome and as exaggeratedly tall as I remembered him, put his head through the door of my room, overlooking. "What are you doing still in your sleeping dress? Go change."

"No, let me sleep a little longer. And you aren't supposed to enter a lady's private room, you scoundrel."

"Okay, my lady. I am leaving right away. I will wait for you in the hallway."

"Aaah... Okay. Okay. I will be ready in a minute. A hot minute. Maybe two. Or five. Or—"

"I got it, Georgia. Just get ready, I have good news for you."

Resigned to my fate, I left the arms of my sweet bed, disappointed.

I wanted to sleep a little more. Sleep was really important for me.

'I should have been reborn as a salted fish. A spoiled rotten brat of a rich businessman somewhere or a princess of a rich culturally opened kingdom.'

I went to take a quick shower and put on a blue, close-to-the body dress. This time, I left my hair down, without any accessories. Then I wore a pair of convenient, but slightly plain, black shoes.

"First, why shrimp? Second, hello! And third, what news?"

"Calm down, Georgia. Hello to you too," the big boy said as he ruffled my head-something he had taken the habit of doing these days—while smiling cheerfully.

He was really sunny. Not the same type as Danny since he exuded something more feral and sensual, which was different from the heartwarming and comfortable energy Danny transmitted, but sunny nonetheless.

"The news is that after my stage at the tavern, I will be directly recommended to the red star circle."

"Really? That's awesome. Congratulations, Aaron!"

"Thank you."

The red star circle was one of the institutes serving and protecting the country. They were in charge of fighting the monsters at the borders and protecting the city. They were like a mix of what would be the police in the modern world and mercenaries.

But one thing was sure: they were, without doubt, true knights. Brave and valiant.

A lot of knights disciples wanted to join the circle, especially commoners, but not everyone could enter as it required precise standards.

"And shrimp is because you look like one, frail and pink."
