Chapter 35: Blind rage

Ezekiel's quest to find Thalia had led him through many perils and challenges. He had faced treacherous terrains, battled fierce creatures, and navigated the labyrinthine depths of ancient ruins. His determination was unwavering, fueled by the hope of reuniting with Thalia. However, the deeper he ventured into the unknown, the more dangerous the journey became. Little did he know, his path was about to lead him into a deadly trap.

It has been a day since her disappearance. It was a night shrouded in an unnatural darkness, the moon and stars hidden behind thick clouds. The air was heavy with tension, the silence almost deafening. Ezekiel pressed on, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and anger. He had received a tip from a mysterious source, one that hinted at Thalia's location. Blinded by his desperation and fury, he failed to notice the subtle signs of danger that lurked in the shadows.

His steps echoed through the dense forest as he followed the narrow, winding path. The trees towered above him, their branches intertwining to form a canopy that blocked out the scant light from the moon. The underbrush was thick, the ground uneven and littered with fallen leaves and branches. His senses were on high alert, but his focus was entirely on finding Thalia. The memory of her face, the sound of her voice, drove him forward with relentless determination.

Unbeknownst to Ezekiel, he was being watched. Hidden in the shadows were the Caruvia Minions, malevolent creatures sworn to protect their master's domain. They had been waiting for him, biding their time until the moment was right. Ezekiel's rage had clouded his judgment, making him an easy target for their cunning trap.

As he ventured deeper into the forest, the path began to narrow, leading him into a dense thicket. The air grew colder, a chill that seemed to seep into his very bones. The sounds of the forest faded away, replaced by an eerie silence. Ezekiel felt a sense of unease, but he pushed it aside, convinced that he was close to finding Thalia.

Suddenly, without warning, the ground beneath him gave way. He stumbled forward, his foot caught in a hidden snare. Before he could react, a net sprang up from the underbrush, ensnaring him in its tangled web. He struggled against the bindings, but the more he fought, the tighter they became. The Caruvia Minions emerged from the shadows, their grotesque forms illuminated by the dim light. They were creatures of nightmare, their eyes glowing with malevolent intent.

Ezekiel's rage boiled over as he fought to free himself. He suddenly felt both his vampire and witch sides get suppressed and felt no less than a human. "Let me go!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the forest. But the minions only laughed, their voices a chilling chorus that sent shivers down his spine. One of them stepped forward, a wicked grin on its twisted face. It raised a clawed hand, striking Ezekiel across the face with brutal force. Pain exploded in his head, his vision blurring.

"We've been waiting for you," the creature hissed, its breath hot and foul against his skin. "Your search ends here."

Ezekiel's struggles grew weaker as the minions closed in. They struck him again and again, their blows leaving him battered and bloodied. His vision dimmed, the world around him fading into darkness. He felt a sharp pain in his side, the cold bite of a blade slicing through flesh and muscle. He gasped, the taste of blood filling his mouth. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was the twisted face of his captor, grinning with sadistic delight.

When Ezekiel awoke, he was lying on the forest floor, his body wracked with pain. His vision was hazy, the world around him spinning. He tried to move, but his limbs felt heavy and unresponsive. He was alone, the Caruvia Minions having left him for dead. The forest was silent once more, the only sound his ragged breathing.

Through the fog of pain, he heard voices calling his name. They were faint at first, but they grew louder, more insistent. He felt a hand on his shoulder, gentle but firm. "Ezekiel, stay with us," a voice urged, filled with concern. He forced his eyes open, squinting against the dim light. He saw the faces of his allies, their expressions etched with worry and fear.

They had been following him in secret, knowing he would need their help despite his insistence that he could find Thalia on his own. Now, they worked quickly to tend to his wounds, their hands moving with practiced precision. But it was clear that Ezekiel's injuries were severe, the blood loss too great.

As they worked to stabilize him, Aurelia turned to the others. "We need to find Thalia," she said urgently. "She might be able to help."

The others nodded, their expressions grim. They had come prepared for a rescue mission, armed and ready to face whatever dangers lay ahead. With a sense of urgency, they set out to find Thalia, following the faint trail left by the Caruvia Minions.

It wasn't long before they found her, held captive in a makeshift camp deep in the forest. The minions had been careless, their guard down after believing they had dealt with Ezekiel. His allies launched a swift and brutal attack, taking the minions by surprise. The battle was fierce, but their determination and skill saw them through. One by one, the minions fell, their twisted forms crumpling to the ground.

Thalia was weak, her body bruised and battered, but she was alive. As her bonds were cut, she looked up at her rescuers with a mix of relief and gratitude. "Ezekiel," she gasped, her voice hoarse. "Where is he?"

"He's badly hurt," Elara replied, her expression somber. "We need to get him back to the camp."

They moved quickly, carrying Thalia and the barely conscious Ezekiel through the forest. The journey was arduous, each step filled with a sense of urgency. They could see the life fading from Ezekiel's eyes, his breaths growing more shallow. Despite their best efforts, it was clear that his injuries were too severe. Blood soaked through the bandages, his skin pale and clammy.

Back at the camp, they laid Ezekiel on a makeshift bed, their faces etched with despair. Thalia knelt beside him, tears streaming down her face. She took his hand in hers, her grip gentle but firm. "Ezekiel, please stay with us," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

His eyes fluttered open, the pain evident in his gaze. "Thalia," he breathed, his voice barely audible. "I'm so sorry... I couldn't..."

"Don't talk," she said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "You did everything you could."

Despite their efforts to heal him, Ezekiel's condition continued to deteriorate. The wounds were too deep, the blood loss too great. His allies worked tirelessly, their faces drawn with exhaustion and worry. They had seen many injuries in their time, but this was different. The sense of impending loss hung heavy in the air.

Thalia turned to them, her eyes filled with a fierce determination. "Let me tell you what happened," she said, her voice steady despite the tears. "Maybe it will help us understand."

She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I was taken by the Caruvia Minions while I was traveling through the forest," she began. "I didn't even see them coming. One moment, I was walking along the path, and the next, I felt this overwhelming force. It was like a dark cloud descended over me, crushing my will and sapping my strength. I couldn't move, couldn't even cry out for help."

She shuddered at the memory, her eyes distant. "They dragged me into the depths of the forest. I don't remember much of the journey, just flashes of twisted trees and shadowy figures. Every time I tried to fight back, the force would grow stronger, pushing me down, making it impossible to resist."

Aurelia nodded, her expression thoughtful. "That must have been the power of the Caruvia Minions. They have a way of suppressing their captives' strength, making it easier to control them."

Thalia continued, her voice trembling. "I felt so helpless. It was like being trapped in a nightmare, unable to wake up. They brought me to their camp, and that's when I saw... him. Their leader. He was unlike anything I've ever seen, a creature of pure darkness. His presence was overwhelming, his power immense. I could feel it pressing down on me, a weight I couldn't escape."

She looked at Ezekiel, her eyes filled with sorrow. "I tried to stay strong, to hold on to the hope that you would find me. But the longer I was there, the harder it became. The darkness was suffocating, relentless. I don't know how much longer I could have held on."

Ezekiel's breath hitched, a weak smile forming on his lips. "You're safe now," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "That's all that matters."

Thalia squeezed his hand, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You saved me, Ezekiel. You found me, just like you promised. But you need to hold on. We need you."

Aurelia placed a hand on Thalia's shoulder, her expression gentle but firm. "We'll do everything we can to save him," she said. "But we need to act quickly.
