The Last Goodbye

When Emily returned to Carla's place, Carla greeted her in surprise. "You're back so fast."

Seeing Emily with only a carry-on bag, Carla raised an eyebrow. "You only have this much?"

Emily smiled. "Yes. This is it."

"What about your other things? Your clothes, bags, shoes, and jewelry?"

"I don't need those. They weren't really mine," Emily replied.

Ever since their marriage, Alex had showered Emily with presents, especially when he returned from business trips. Her closet had been filled with his gifts, but she left them all behind, including her engagement and wedding rings. When they married, the Johnsons were on the brink of bankruptcy, and she had nothing. Now that she was leaving, she didn't want to take anything with her.
