Elena and Owen remained hidden behind the tapestry, watching as the Mastermind's men scoured the outpost. The leader, the man with the scar, barked orders as his team spread out, their weapons drawn. Elena knew they had to move quickly and quietly if they wanted to avoid confrontation.
She whispered to Owen, "We need to get to the back entrance. If we can slip past them, we can find Jay and warn him about the danger."
Owen nodded, his eyes fixed on the approaching guards. They were methodical in their search, checking every corner and crevice for signs of intruders. Elena knew they had little time before they were discovered.
As one of the guards approached their hiding spot, Elena signaled to Owen to follow her lead. She pressed her back against the stone wall, edging towards the shadowy corridor that led to the back of the outpost. The guard stopped mere inches from their hiding spot, his gaze sweeping the room. Elena held her breath, hoping the guard would move on.
After what felt like an eternity, the guard finally turned away, heading towards the central chamber. Elena took the opportunity to slip into the corridor, with Owen close behind. They moved swiftly but silently, the dim torchlight casting eerie shadows along the walls.
The corridor led them to a small stairwell that descended into the lower levels of the outpost. Elena knew that these old structures often had secret passages and hidden exits. If they could find one, they might have a chance to escape without being seen.
They carefully descended the stone steps, their footsteps muffled by the thick dust. As they reached the bottom, they found themselves in a narrow hallway with several doors on either side. Elena examined each door, looking for signs of use. One door had a broken lock, indicating it had been forced open recently.
"This could be our way out," she whispered, gesturing to the door.
Owen nodded, but before they could open it, they heard voices approaching from the stairwell. The Mastermind's men were coming down, and they didn't have much time.
Elena quickly opened the door, revealing a small storage room filled with crates and old furniture. It wasn't the secret passage she had hoped for, but it offered a temporary hiding spot. They slipped inside and closed the door, listening as the voices grew louder.
The leader of the group entered the hallway, his footsteps heavy on the stone floor. "Search every room," he commanded. "They couldn't have gone far."
Elena and Owen crouched behind a stack of crates, their hearts racing. The leader's voice was getting closer, and they could hear the other guards opening doors and checking each room.
"We need to create a distraction," Owen whispered. "If we can draw their attention away from this area, we might have a chance to escape."
Elena nodded. "Do you still have those smoke pellets you took from the armory?"
Owen reached into his bag and pulled out a small pouch. "Got them right here."
Elena took one of the smoke pellets and tossed it towards the far corner of the room. It hit the ground and released a thick cloud of smoke, obscuring their hiding spot. The sudden burst of smoke caught the guards' attention, and they rushed towards the source of the commotion.
"Now's our chance," Elena whispered, grabbing Owen's arm. They slipped out of the storage room and hurried down the hallway, heading towards the back entrance. The smoke gave them just enough cover to avoid being seen.
As they reached the exit, they could hear the guards shouting and the leader's voice rising above the chaos. Elena knew they had to move fast to stay ahead of their pursuers. They pushed open the back door and slipped into the night, the cool air a welcome relief from the tense atmosphere inside the outpost.
They ran into the forest, the branches brushing against their faces as they made their escape. Elena knew they weren't out of danger yet, but they had a head start. She hoped they could find Jay and regroup before the Mastermind's men caught up with them.
The forest was dark and full of hidden dangers, but Elena and Owen were determined to survive. They had faced worse odds before, and they weren't about to give up now.
