Chapter 12: Shadows of the Past

The victory at the southern front brought a brief respite, but the war was far from over. Alaric and Lysandra, now celebrated as heroes, continued to fight, their bond growing ever stronger. Yet, the shadows of the past lingered, and new challenges awaited.

One evening, as they prepared for the next phase of their mission, Sir Cedric approached them. His face, usually stern, was softened by a rare expression of vulnerability.

"I need to speak with you," he said, his voice low. "There is something you must know."

They followed him to a secluded part of the camp, where the noise and bustle of preparation faded into the background. Sir Cedric took a deep breath, his eyes reflecting a deep sorrow.

"Lysandra, there's something I haven't told you. Something about your accident."

Lysandra's heart skipped a beat. "What is it, Father?"

Sir Cedric sighed, his shoulders heavy with the weight of his words. "The fall that paralyzed you—it wasn't just an accident. It was a targeted attack. The demons wanted to take you out because they sensed your potential as a mage."

Lysandra's eyes widened, a mix of shock and anger flashing across her face. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I wanted to protect you," Sir Cedric said, his voice breaking. "I thought if you didn't know, you could recover without the burden of that knowledge. But now, with the war intensifying, you need to understand the full scope of the threat we face."

Alaric placed a comforting hand on Lysandra's shoulder. "We'll face it together, Lysandra. This doesn't change who you are or what you're capable of."

Lysandra nodded, her expression hardening with resolve. "Thank you, Father. And thank you, Alaric. I'll use this knowledge to fuel my determination. We won't let the demons win."

As they stood together under the darkening sky, the weight of their mission pressing down on them, they knew that the road ahead would be fraught with peril. But with their love and unwavering resolve, they would face whatever challenges came their way.

The battle for Elyndor was far from over, and their journey was just beginning.
