‘‘Are you feeling okay?’’ Oliver inquired. ‘‘If you want, I can go back and knock out that guy with a single punch.’’ I knew he was just joking to lighten up the mood and I couldn’t help but smile.

‘‘I'm sorry about that… and no, but thanks...’’ I said. Jasper deserved more than just a punch.

He heaved a sigh before leaning closer and gently lifting my chin so that I could look at him. I scanned his eyes for indications of anger or derision, but all I discovered in their hazel depths was a genuine concern for the situation. ‘‘Would you be interested in going to a different place for dinner? I totally understand if you don’t like to stay, or if you feel that it would be more convenient for us to carry out this activity some other day...’’

I smiled and shook my head. ‘‘No... don't worry about it. Remember, I'm going to leave the next day. This would be the first and the last time that we’re doing this…’’
