‘‘Let me take you to shopping now...’’ Marcus replied to me as he offered his hand to hold mine, and then we entered the elevator together. ‘‘I know shopping is one of your all-time favorite activities here in Japan...’’

I felt offended because I had the impression that it wasn't true. It occurred to me that there were activities besides shopping that I would enjoy more, such as going for a stroll in an unfamiliar setting, tasting a variety of foods at a night market, seeing the sunrise while concocting a new novel in my head, or watching the sunset with someone.

‘‘Sure!’’ I tried my hardest to muster up a grin as I squeezed his hand, and I smiled at him. ‘‘Shopping is life!’’

After that, we proceeded for a stroll around Ginza, which is located along Tokyo's elite and is only one drive away from Hotel Shinagawa.

Our first stop. We visited the Tiffany & Co. store.
