I watched Joe as he kicked a small stone, his head still lowered down, but then he froze when he saw the stone roll and stopped at my feet, and slowly, he looked up.

Joe’s eyes lit up as soon as he saw me, his little face broke out into a surprised smile, but then he seemed to realize that he was still upset with me, so his smile gradually faded, and showed me a face that pretended to be in a cold demeanor instead, which reminded me so much of his dad.

But no matter what expression Joe showed me, he was still the little boy that I adore, and this face of his just made him look more adorable.

‘‘Hi…’’ I smiled, crouching down to his level, trying to make eye contact with him, but he looked away, avoiding my eyes. ‘‘Joe, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it to happen…’’

I reached out to touch his face, but stepped back and turned on his heels, walking away from me.
