TRAVIS’ P O V
The whole scene was captured in slow motion, in the bright daylight. For a moment, I shut my eyes, took a deep breath, and remembered him as he stepped out from hiding behind the tree, clad in a black hoodie, billowing at the sleeves. I knew he’d come for her. For Katrina.
I had known, and sensed it somehow, and the first thing that came to my mind was to protect her. I remember how time stopped, screeched to a halt, that breathless moment, before I threw myself at him.
I remember the sharp metal drilling into me before my body fell to the ground.
And when I heard Katrina scream my name, that was the moment when I could finally surrender to the relief, the enormous lightening relief that Katrina was no longer in danger, and I could give in to the pain, the weakness taking over my entire body, the tremor spreading like an unstoppable rash, making me, my whole body tremble.
