The sun rose in the east, and the first ray of sunlight spilled down, reflecting shimmering light on the surface of the lake.
"So, you two noticed something unusual about this place, which is why you came here and saw Magik and Wolfsbane, right?"
By the ravaged lakeside, Alex sat on the trunk of a broken maple tree, his gaze fixed on Cloak and Dagger as he spoke slowly.
Cloak and Dagger—Alex wasn't familiar with them at all. Or rather, he rarely saw them show up during major events.
They were street-level heroes, and compared to the ones in Hell's Kitchen, their reputation was far less significant. So even though they were powerful, they seldom had the chance to take the spotlight in important situations.
Cloak, whose real name was Tyrone Johnson, was a black kid from the slums. Unlike most others from similar backgrounds, Tyrone was a rare, genuinely kind young man—his only flaw being a bit of a stutter.
Dagger, named Tandy Bowen, was a privileged white girl from a well-off family. While not part of any major corporate dynasty, her family was still considered upper class in their local area.
Unable to accept the stepfather her mother brought home, she chose to run away—and met Tyrone, who was also living on his own.
After an experiment activated their latent mutant genes, both of them awakened their respective superpowers. One represented darkness, the other light.
Tyrone's dark dimension forced him to feed on life force, while Tandy's light could counteract that drawback. And Tandy, in turn, needed to regularly release her life-force light—otherwise, she would become mentally unstable.
Because of this, the two of them became inseparable—complementing and depending on one another.
Their identities were fascinating: one black, one white; one poor, one rich. Two people from completely different classes and races—the contrast couldn't be more stark.
Perhaps… that was their selling point?
But Alex hadn't really bought into it in his previous life, so he didn't know them all that well. They were the kind of characters he could just about recognize by name.
If he hadn't seen them here in person, he wouldn't have realized the energy he sensed was Cloak's dark energy.
The two of them didn't look very old—probably in their early twenties. Judging by how they carried themselves, they hadn't been active for long. Despite trying to act mature, the fear in their eyes was impossible to hide.
"Yes, sir. We have a special sensitivity to space," Dagger Tandy said gently. "After arriving in this world, we've been able to sense spatial rifts. In order to uncover the truth, we've been actively searching for other travelers like us."
Tandy's voice was pleasant, and her manner was polite. She didn't have that inherent arrogance often associated with white elites—perhaps thanks to her long time living with Tyrone.
As Tandy spoke, Alex turned his gaze toward Magik and Wolfsbane.
Those two appeared significantly older and more mature.
"I also came here through a spatial rift," Alex said. "At first, I thought it was just an isolated case, but I didn't expect so many rifts to appear."
Magik and Wolfsbane didn't reply. Their expressions were strained, and from their looks, it was clear their minds were not at ease.
"I think I have a rough grasp of the situation now," Alex said after a moment of thought. "No matter what, we need to stick together—for now, at least we need to understand why we ended up here in the first place."
He turned back to Cloak and Dagger.
"Let's start with you. Tell me—how did you get here? Or rather, what's the last thing you remember?"
Tandy and Tyrone exchanged a look. After a moment of hesitation, Tandy spoke up.
"We were investigating a smuggling case in Mexico. Honestly, I don't know exactly what happened—it felt like the world was ending.
I remember the sky turning dark red, like some kind of unknown monster was hiding in the clouds. Tyrone was the first to sense something was wrong, so we contacted Karolina. She told us to head to the nearest Sanctum Sanctorum to hide—"
"Wait a second!"
Alex suddenly interrupted, frowning deeply.
"Where did you say she told you to go?!"
Startled by Alex's reaction, Tandy stammered, "T-The Sanctum Sanctorum… is there something wrong?"
Something wrong?
Something very wrong.
Alex stared at her intently. With his ability, he could tell she wasn't lying. And that only made things more serious.
According to Miss Minutes and the Watcher's descriptions, this place should fall within the timeline of the X-Men movie universe. In other words, the surrounding timelines should also belong to the X-Men universe.
In 20th Century Fox's universe, there was absolutely no mention of the Avengers, yet Dagger and Cloak mentioned the Sanctum Sanctorum. That clearly proved that in her universe, the Avengers actually existed.
If Alex remembered correctly, while Cloak and Dagger weren't members of the X-Men, the mutant genes within their bodies were very real. Even if their superpowers didn't technically count as mutant abilities, they were still closely tied to mutant genetics.
So Alex wasn't surprised by their appearance—but the fact that the Avengers existed in their world was something he found hard to believe.
Frowning, Alex slowly looked up and asked Tandy directly: "Can I ask—this 'Karolina' you mentioned… who is she?"
Tandy gave a small nod. "Karolina is a friend we met a while back. She and her childhood friends formed an alliance to fight against their parents. But after a while, we gradually lost touch."
Alex stopped paying attention to her words at that point. In fact, the moment he heard "alliance" and "fighting against their parents," an image appeared in his mind—of a girl glowing with pink light.
Karolina Dean—the alien girl that Kara had saved back when Deadpool was slaughtering the Marvel Universe.
The young hero group she was once part of was called The Runaways.
It seemed the mystery behind why the Avengers existed in their world had been solved. In Alex's memory, Cloak and Dagger had indeed teamed up with The Runaways at some point.
And The Runaways were closely tied to the Avengers' universe—there were even mentions of Wakanda, Stark Industries, Kaecilius, and Dormammu. So, in that case, it was no surprise that Cloak and Dagger knew about the Sanctum Sanctorum.
What did surprise Alex, though, was that these two had ended up in this world.
"And after that? Did you make it to the Sanctum Sanctorum?" Alex continued.
"No." This time, it was Cloak—Tyrone—who responded. He wasn't stuttering now. "Something went wrong during the teleportation. By the time we realized what had happened… we were already in this world."
Tandy picked up from there, letting out a sigh. "No Avengers. No Captain America. No Doctor Strange. We have no idea where we are."
"You've never heard of mutants?" Pietro couldn't help but ask.
In her memory, Alex had mentioned that most of these outsiders had some connection to mutants, so upon hearing Tandy and Tyrone's account, her curiosity was piqued.
"Mutants?" Tandy looked at Pietro, then turned her gaze toward Magik and Wolfsbane. "To be honest, we only heard that word for the first time from these two."
Sensing Tandy's gaze, Magik finally nodded, her face cold.
"Yes. Mutants. Why—are you one too?"
"X-Men trainee. Pietro," Pietro said as she extended a hand toward the unfamiliar Magik.
Magik looked Pietro over from head to toe. After confirming she had never met her before, she reached out and shook her hand. Then she introduced herself.
"X-Men member, Magik. Illyana Rasputin. This is Wolfsbane—Rahne Sinclair."
"You're actual X-Men members?!" Pietro was stunned. She knew all the X-Men, but in her memory, she had never seen these two before.
"Don't be surprised. Every parallel universe develops differently, so it's perfectly normal that you don't know each other," Alex waved his hand to interrupt their conversation, then continued.
"I want to know—when I came looking for you, I was attacked by a group of monsters. What exactly are those creatures?"
Alex wasn't referring to anything else but those tall, faceless black shadows. Everyone present clearly knew what he meant.
After hearing Alex's words, the four fell silent.
After a while, Magik couldn't help but speak. "Actually, I'm curious about that too. I suspect those demons were manifested by Mirage from my mind."
"Mirage."
Alex carefully considered the name.
Mirage was also a member of the new mutant squad. In fact, her power was very strong—arguably even stranger than Professor X's in some ways.
She could manifest people's deepest fears—not as illusions, but as real, tangible forces that could affect reality itself.
Alex's understanding of Mirage only went as far as knowing she was once kidnapped to Asgard and eventually blessed by Odin to become one of the Valkyries.
But clearly, the Mirage Magik mentioned wasn't connected to that story.
"Can you explain more? If I'm not mistaken, Mirage should be your teammate. Why would she manifest those demons to attack you?"
"That… it's a long story."
Magik smiled wryly, her smile full of sorrow—giving off a deeply tragic vibe.
Beside her, Wolfsbane let out a soft sigh.
She spoke the first words Alex had heard from her since he saw her.
"Mirage destroyed our world!"
