Chapter 55

"Eugene, let's plan another general assembly for midnight. Warn everyone. I'll go catch some sleep before that."

Receiving confirmation from his friend, Alexander crawled into the dugout and stretched out on the skins with pleasure.

"I won't be able to fall asleep now," the vampire thought, but he didn't manage to finish his thought, and within a second, he was peacefully dozing off.

The idea of attacking the main camp caused a storm of enthusiasm. Even those who yesterday were against any violent actions were now actively eager for battle. There was no need to argue about the fact that destroying the enemy squad of local authorities would allow establishing good relations with them. The recent victory and its trophies excited people so much that any arguments against it simply wouldn't be heard.

Leonid was entrusted with commanding the attack and organizing it. He first sent three squads of scouts to the main camp. After that, he began to form the army directly, starting with separating all the mages into a special unit. Then, an archer squad was created. More precisely, an archer squad.

The squad consisted of only five girls, there were few arrows, and Olga, who already had experience in archery, was appointed as its commander. The squad was given time for training in archery, and people who made additional arrows for them were assigned.

Then two "elite" assault squads were formed, which were equipped according to the type of armor worn. One went—those with leather armor and shields, the other—chainmail, as well as a couple of people in plate armor. The rest of the people were assigned to a consolidated unit under the general name "horde"—some people were even without clothes, with primitive spears and clubs in their hands.

Unlike the previous attack, there was time for planning and preparation. Everyone had to make makeshift shields by using magic to chop boards and connect them together.

Full preparation for the attack was greatly shortened by the clear day. Even in the middle of the night, the weather allowed for the hope of a twilight day, and even possibly rain, but just before dawn, gusts of wind dispersed the clouds, and the vampires scattered to their shelters, falling asleep.

Leonid decided that one more night of weather wouldn't change anything and postponed the attack, even despite reports from scouts that the city commander had started fortifying the camp—soldiers were chopping wood and building palisades. What worried him the most wasn't the fortification of the camp but the enemy mages. So preparation was preferable to a sudden attack.

The additional night had an unexpected result—some people began to doubt the need for the attack. Nobody bothered to talk and persuade them. Leonid simply announced the adoption of the most severe measures against panic-mongers.

Fortunately, such panic-mongers were only found among the "horde"; the "plate-wearers" and "shield-bearers" were determined and resolute. The second clear day in a row gave everyone time to rest well. As soon as the fog disappeared behind the treetops, the camp almost emptied, leaving only guards, children, and a few women watching over them.

At first, the plan was to repeat the scheme of the previous battle, but upon seeing the fortifications, the vampire commander quickly changed plans. Stakes were set up in front of the wall, and in some places, there was a palisade. Everything was calculated to repel attacks by humans, not goblins.

There was still a whole night ahead, so it was decided to exhaust the mages, as the most dangerous opponents. Besides, the night was a time of rest for humans. Vampires had just woken up; there was no need to hurry. The main strike forces were stationed in the forest under Oleg's command. All the mage girls were left with them. Alexander and Sergey, along with the archers, were close to Leonid.
