Chapter 153

- "Any questions?" Silence was his answer. "Then I'll express the general opinion. Maria, we rely on your intuition and perseverance in conducting experiments. The question of transforming people into vampires is not vital for us, but it must be resolved. We need to know the answer; our future plans depend on it. As for what to do with your test subjects, that's for you to decide."

Maria nodded and gestured to the guards to escort the subjects out. The entire conversation had been in Russian, and the trio didn't understand a word. Alexander caught up with Konstantin on the way out.

- "At this rate, we'll remain the only vampires in this world."

There was some truth in that. Pregnant vampire women were still unheard of in the village.

- "I heard Stefania wants to conceive with a vampire. What's that about?"

- "Don't dwell on it, Sasha (Alexander). Maria approached her to inquire about her future plans, whether she would agree if Maria decides to conduct such an experiment."

- "And Stefania, of course, agreed. She practically worships us!"

Konstantin chuckled.

- "That's beside the point! Stefania is a young girl with natural desires!"

- "What?"

- "She wants to have sex! She needs a man."

Now both of them laughed.

- "Oh, I see. Well then, alright."

- "I think so too."

- "And Sophie?"

- "She's fine. The baby is developing normally. We feed her well, take care of her. Her relatives don't think of her, but you know that."

- "How does she feel about us not being human?"

- "She's still afraid."

- "Well, let her be afraid for now."

The duke's procession entering the city went unnoticed by all. Only for one of the most prominent people in the kingdom, the merchant caravans stopped and let him into the city without waiting in line. Alexander, who had come specifically to watch the entrance, remained in the shadows so as not to be noticed or recognized. The delay in the capital was too strange.

The king had already given two battles to the city, fortunately without defeats, but also without victories — the armies dispersed with a draw. The duchy itself continued to suffer from bandits, although the strengthened squadrons of the barons were able to tame their revelry. And the duke sat in the capital and waited for something. Now it was unclear what they were waiting for when the owner finally deigned to appear in his own possessions.

The solemn dinner in honor of the arrival of the dear guest dragged on. And some of those sitting at the tables openly overcame the hot drinks and were in a gloomy state of being. Only three did not drink — the baron, the duke, and Alexander. The reasons why the vampire did not drink were clear, the baron did not touch the spirits because today he first met his future wife, and the sobriety of the duke strained not only the knight but also everyone else at the table. But, of course, no one dared to ask questions.

The vampire liked the baron's fiancée very much. She was a pretty girl, eighteen years old, and made a good impression. She had been a maiden until such a late age, only because of her father's total poverty, who could offer his daughter only his debts as a dowry. And the priests did not lend him any more - the barony had been mortgaged almost three times. The church might have taken the lands and sold them with pleasure, but they were so bad that it was hard to find buyers.

It was left to milk the baron for interest on the debt, beating him out of everything. By the way, the church had offered the Baron a new bride. The bishop, almost immediately offered the candidacy of prirodannitsa, sassy in wenches, and Savoyardi did not miss this chance. He wanted a healthy wife, not a rich one. And today he first met with the bride in person, she arrived with her father in the motorcade of the Duke.
