Chapter 8 One: Kelvin Senses

The water in the electric kettle bubbled vigorously – perfect for a couple having coffee on a romantic date on a cold winter morning. She turned the electric kettle off, placed the tea cups on the table, and filled them with milky coffee. The table was covered in white cloth with open curtains, creating a glowing and friendly atmosphere. Sarah's long green gown symbolized that she was not open for a romantic lunch at Evie's house. A few moments later, the doorbell chimed and a strikingly handsome man walked in. He wore a black leather jacket with luxurious chains around his neck. She directed him to sit on one of the dining chairs with a glass of wine set before him.

"So, how sure are you that this girl," the man said, snapping, and trying to recall something, "What's her name?"

"Evie," Sarah said in annoyance, "I know. You don't believe me or something?"

"Why am I here?" the man asked. Sarah jerked an eyebrow at him, narrating that he was there for something more.

"Look, Um… Okay, what are we gonna do about this girl," Danny said and sighed. "I'm not here for that, all right? I promise you," he added.

"Never said you were," Sarah said with clenched teeth, "Besides, I'm with Henry now. He's even planning on getting married."

"Sarah. Stop," Danny said, avoiding eye contact, "I'm not a fool. I know what this is about."

"What are you talking about?" Sarah asked, sipping wine from her cup. "You don't like the coffee? Or you hate red wine," she said, jeeringly.

Danny shook his head from side to side and sighed multiple times while she talked. "You don't know about Jessica? And Irene?" Danny broke out.

"What about them?" Sarah asked, sounding pretentious.

"Cut the bullshit, Sarah," he said, looking into her eyes this time, "I know what's going on."

"What are you saying? You're starting to offend me right now, Daniel," Sarah said, exasperatedly. She continued muttering questions to him every second that passed by. She was insecure: insecure that he might blast her at some point, or threaten her with something heinous. There was an uncomfortable tranquility that lingered between them for seconds.

"You, Jessica, Irene, name all the whores Henry's slept with, you are all trying to sabotage him. You want to steal the crown and the pieces. Fortunately, you have the staff with you. Good. Hallelujah but …" Danny said with his eyes piercing the table.

"Daniel…"

"You want to get married to him so that you can share his secrets and steal. Your gang of blood-sucking witches also plan on keeping him in exile," he said, and looked at her burning eyes.

"Daniel!" she said, standing up and talking to him. "I've had enough, you've outdone yourself…"

"He's an innocent man, Sarah. He has a daughter and a house to keep. Whatever you're planning, whatever you've hidden under those sleeves, abort it, or you will suffer drastic consequences," Daniel said and relaxed his back on the chair.

"You know nothing about anything," Sarah said. "You had better leave or…" she said under her breath and turned around, "I'll put a bullet in your head."

Daniel gave a slight chuckle before bringing it out. "Who said I didn't see this coming?" He asked and dropped a gun on the table, right beside him. Sarah looked at him in surprise, disgust, and terror. Daniel wasn't able to tell her actual emotion.

"I don't intend to use it… now," Daniel said, and wanted to add something.

"Well, in that case," Sarah said, and started running up the stairs. Daniel shot the gun at the roof; Sarah shook and paused. He pointed the gun at her and ordered her to search her pockets thoroughly. He started walking towards her while she searched around herself slowly and tempestuously. He reached her and directed her back to her seat and sat on the one opposite it.

"I thought you were an immortal," Daniel said, mockingly. "Oh, I forgot. That's why you're chasing after a father and his daughter," he added with a guffaw.

"So, where were we?" Daniel asked.

"Daniel," she said faintly, "you don't know what you're doing. Henry is planning on turning Evie into an immortal being," she said, lifting her voice. "He's the enemy here, not me," she said with the loudest voice.

"You can't fool me, remember?" he said, incredulously, "I'm a member of the Kelvin clan. I'm sure you do know about them. So does Henry," he said with a glare, making him even more handsome.

"Daniel, you don't understand. He's completed the first phase. Evie has started feeling changes; these are not ordinary," Sarah almost shouted, "I saw it today; she paused time," Sarah said persuasively. There was a short moment of realization in Daniel's eyes. "She was in a trance-like form, she seemed like she didn't know what happened. I helped her from falling," Sarah said.

"How?" Daniel asked in a rush.

"I held the time up. It averted the future," she said. Daniel nodded. There was another awkward silence. Sarah couldn't let it pass her by. She began biting her lips and caressing her breasts obviously so that Daniel would notice. She stood up from her chair and walked towards Daniel to feel his chest. Daniel was not giving in to her seductions too easily, but was a little carried away because she was the number one enemy at the moment. He immediately held up his gun at her and ordered her to sit down.

Sarah scoffed, "Are you serious? You've always wanted this. Now, I'm giving it to you."

"Not right now," he said, exhaling very heavily. "We have something on our plate to tackle and finish first."

"You mean the chicken sauce?"

"No. Theophilus," Danny said, "He has his hands on a Kelvin."

Daniel began wincing and gazing at the ceiling irritably. He seemed like he was shooing off an insect, or perceiving an offensive odor. He stood up alongside his gun and began walking around.

"They've got him. It's Nnaemeka," Daniel said.

"Who's he?" asked Sarah.

"He's a Kelvin," Daniel said hurriedly and stood up.

"Daniel, you have to explain things to me here," Sarah said with a vulnerable voice. "Maybe I can help you."

"Look, Theophilus is a very dangerous person. I can't let you come out here. He's very powerful. He's got eyes everywhere." Daniel covered his hands with his mouth in disbelief, "Nnaemeka never knew anything about Theophilus. He probably didn't know who he was standing up against," he slotted his gun into his jacket, "Theophilus had always wanted to end us by every possible means. He thinks we might have stolen the staff from him."

"Let me come," Sarah pleaded. She begged Daniel to say nothing about the staff or Evie, but Daniel's reply gave her little hope. Her face was dawned with thoughts when she said, "Evie. What about Evie? Can you tell whether she's there?"

"No. My senses are reserved for the Kelvins alone," Daniel said calmly. "But if Evie's there, I will find her too," Daniel said, putting his hands on Sarah's shoulders. He pushed his face forward to hers to receive a kiss. Although she wanted it to be intent, he tried as much as possible for the shortest.

"I must find him," Daniel said. "And Evie."
