CHAPTER 22 Schallert Family

Ever since I returned from seeing Alfie, my spirits have been high. As the expression goes, if you keep pushing, eventually you will be successful. After putting in so much effort I am starting to get a sliver of optimism.

I sat in the garden eating strawberry tarts and berries, enjoying the way the sugar melted on my tongue. The walled garden was lush with plants of every shape and size - flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruits all grew together in one space like one large garden salad. As I watched the day unfold around me, I came to a realization that this man seemed to lack nothing. Even after finishing two whole plates I couldn't think of anything to exchange with him.

For a moment, I didn't know if he was really giving me a chance or if he was trying to make me give up and completely solve his problem. Perhaps he felt that life was incredibly beautiful without me bothering him for a week.

I don't know why, but thinking about this made me feel bad.
