The weight of their words crashed into me like a tidal wave, leaving me reeling with shock and disbelief.
Devon's silence was its own statement, but Chase... that bastard had shattered every boundary I had ever set. I stood there, frozen, on the brink of sharing my most vulnerable moment, my special day, with someone who didn't give a damn- thank god, he was late! Or else, I would have forever blamed myself for sharing this night with him.
"God..." My voice trembled into a whisper as my fingers tangled in my hair, sliding down to cover my mouth. Tears welled in my eyes, stinging with the pain of betrayal.
Why did it hurt so fucking much?
His words were true enough, but the callousness with which he spoke them cut deeper than I could bear.
It wasn't unreasonable to hope for even a shred of friendship from him, was it? Why else would I have invited him here, to share this personal part of my life that I usually spent alone? But I was wrong. So utterly wrong.
