Chapter 1: Morning Glory

"Freya!" I heard someone calling out my name. I didn't want to get up now. I worked late last night.

"Freya!" the voice shouted again. As I gained consciousness, I realized it was a feminine voice calling me downstairs.

"Freya!" It was my mom, who somehow seemed unusually excited this morning.

"Coming!" I shouted, pulling my blankets down.

I never liked mornings. They were just painful reminders of the hell I had to endure each day.

"Ouch," I cried in pain as I crashed into my study table. There's no window in the attic to let light in. My room is the attic. I switched on a small bulb to find my things. As soon as I got dressed, I switched it off. I couldn't risk my father finding out that I turned on the bulb in the morning.

I looked around my small room before switching off the bulb. My bed is made of wooden boxes and old clothes, my study table from the junkyard, books littered on the floor, clothes hanging from cloth pins, and a mirror attached to the wall. That's my room. I sighed and switched off the bulb.

I ran downstairs as fast as possible. I didn't want Mum to wait.

"Mum!" I called out as soon as I got down.

She was smiling brightly, holding an envelope in her hand. She handed it to me, her hands shaking with excitement.

While I don't love my mother, she's the only person in this world I can trust. After all, she understands what I'm going through.

Both my mom and I are stuck in this house, living a life of poverty. Both of us are abused by my father, who beats us. Both of us witnessed my brother's death at my father's hand. Both of us have suffered everything together. Neither of us stood up for each other, but both of us silently suffered.

"What is it?" I asked as I started opening the envelope.

"Open it!" Mum said in a childish tone.

I sighed and opened it.

A thick letter slipped into my hand. But what stood out the most to me was the name: "Elegans Comprehensive."

Could it be-

"You did it, Freya! You did it!" I saw Mom crying with happiness.

"I-I got into Elegans Comprehensive?" I asked Mom. I couldn't believe this. This had to be a dream.

"Yes, dear! You got it!" my mom said, looking at me proudly.

Elegans Comprehensive is a college one could enter only through two means: money or scholarship. It accepted only the best students, and now, I was going to be a part of it. I finally get to escape this hell. Finally, I am free from my father.

I fell to my knees. I couldn't believe it. I did it. Finally, my life will have peace. A tear escaped my eye.

Life is finally giving me another chance.

Sunlight fell on my face as I remained on my knees. A small laugh escaped my lips. Finally!

"Freya?" Mom said, unsure of herself.
