As I had expected, John hadn't been excited to see us, and the only reason he hadn't immediately thrown stones at me and Damian was because we were surrounded by guards.

"What did you come here for this time around?! Did you come to take the rest of my family away from me?!" The old man sneered. His grief was palpable, and his entire body radiated hate and rage. He was nothing like the man I used to know, and I found it difficult to believe that Jerome's death was the only thing that had changed him. Sure, the loss of his last child was certain to take a toll on him, but this was a completely different person in front of me.

I took a deep breath, trying my best to maintain a warm smile even though it was difficult when I was being pressed with hate from different corners.
