A soft cry erupted from Maggie's throat when she fell. Not loud enough to be heard by the others, including the footmen she sent away to take care of the fire.
Disoriented, Maggie saw her panicked horse thrashing about, hooves pounding the earth just inches from her sprawled form.
Thankfully, a surge of adrenaline in her blood pushed past the blossoming pain. With a grunt of effort, she scrambled away, pulling herself clear just as a thundering hoof scraped past her shoulder. The frightened stallion bolted, disappearing into the smoke-choked distance, likely spooked back towards Huntington Hall.
"Ah..."
A single choked sob escaped Maggie's lips.
Hurt.
It hurt so much.
She did not know how long she lay there, unmoving.
