Kael who sat in his rigged up wheelchair stared at the two of them as they stood close to each other and he noticed that the girl seemed to be hiding from him behind Ara who stood as if he was protecting her from someone and he frowned.
"I happened to come across Princess Yvette on her way to the library and I decided to show her the way, we did not expect to see you here." Ara said sounding smug.
"Unaccompanied?" Kael said, with an eyebrow raised.
The singular word sounding accusatory and Naiari blanched in realization of how it must look for her to be alone with a man who was not her betrothed.
"I only sent her maid away to the kitchen for some treats she could enjoy while reading but since I see that she will be in good company I will take my leave of you both."
Ara turned to her and bowed low and raised her slender fingers to his lips once more before turning to Kael and bowing low and saying with a hint of mockery in his voice.
"Your majesty." Then he was gone.
Left alone, the two of them stared at each other awkwardly, Naiari wishing she could just disappear while Kael stared quizzically at her and wondered why she was here in the library.
'Was she curious and seeking answers?'
While the Lycans were open about their existence there was a lot of speculation and myth about them most especially among the humans who had never had the opportunity to meet Lycans ever.
"Do not think even for a moment that I will let you walk around with my cousin making a fool of me." Kael broke the silence, his voice cold and irritated.
Her face hardened and she glared at him.
"We did nothing, he was only courteous to me and a gentleman the whole time." She snapped in indignant outrage that he would think so lowly of her and his own cousin.
"I don't care what it is, you are to be my bride and I forbid you to be alone with Ara." He commanded harshly.
He could not understand why he felt so possessive and protective towards her? Maybe he should let her fall into Ara's clutches, that would serve her right for being so gullible.
It was true that she was to be his wife but he did not want a wife in the first place and even though she was a beautiful enough woman, her features did not attract him enough for him to act this way.
He just felt a strange way about her, it was like she pulled him in and repelled him at the same time. As if something was missing in her that made him not want her yet the thought of her being happy in someone else's presence riled him up and made him want to wreck havoc.
"You obviously do not want me here, why don't you just let me go!" She demanded.
"Never!" He answered abruptly.
"Why? It's not like you even like me."
"You willingly walked into my lair, what animal have you heard of giving up their prey?" He said in a sinister voice, his hard eyes so unlike his cousin's warm ones glittered.
He wondered why she so desperately wanted to go back, could it be that there was someone back at home that she wanted? He also wondered if she would still want to leave if she had been marrying Ara not him.
He picked up a small bell on his lap and rang it then the door opened and a stout young man came in and acknowledged Naiari with a bow before going behind Kael and pushing him out of the library.
As Kael went out of the library, he forced his mind away from the human princess and instead turned to what he had noticed in the forest.
He had not yet told anyone about the concentration of dead animals and trees in the middle of the forest and he had only stumbled on it by chance when he had gone to rescue Yvette.
He was unfortunately unable to confide in anyone in the kingdom because he knew that someone was out for his life and it was better for them to think that he was unaware of anything and incapacitated.
As soon as he had laid Yvette in her bed, he had slipped back to his place up in the tower and ordered his man servant to take him down to the library where he had locked himself there, researching and checking out many books.
He still did not have a clear view of what was happening but the books had hinted in the same direction he was headed, the cause of the destruction in the forest was possibly black magic at play. He would need the opinion of someone more knowledgeable about things like that than he was and he knew exactly who to call.
His only worry was that by the time he arrived, all the evidence might be removed from the location but he prayed that they could still get a definitive answer and hopefully they would also be able to fish out the person who was responsible for the death of his parents and his infirmity.
He felt his hopes rise that he would be able to put an end to the strike he had been forced to deal with and he hoped that this time he would be successful.
