Chapter 77: Something is changing

And so, after Kai and Hina were shown to their rooms, nightfall arrived.

Kai's mind was full of doubts and unanswered questions, and for that reason, he decided that in the next few minutes, he would sneak out of his room to eavesdrop on what his parents were talking about.

The fact that they went to bed so early, the fact that they had practically ignored Yuna the whole time… too many strange things not to be noticed.

At the same time, however, he was extremely tired and just wanted to sleep, so a good night's rest would do him a lot of good.

Hina had been taken to another room instead of Kai's.

Were his parents really hiding something from him? Or was it all in his imagination?

Meanwhile, Kai lay on the bed and started thinking about a lot of things.

"Is it normal that I don't even trust my own parents, who loved and raised me? Why do I feel this sense of anxiety?" Kai asked himself, turning onto his side in a fetal position.

It's not surprising… so much had happened to him in such a short time.

And tomorrow, he would have to return to school as if nothing had happened.

He had killed a man.

He had blood on his hands, something he never expected to have to do.

But if he hadn't done it, he wouldn't be lying in that bed thinking about all these things.

He kept thinking about how it wasn't normal to suspect his own parents, but his mind couldn't stop having doubts.

Kai felt like the whole world was against him, and the pressure of all the events was crushing him.

His collapse in the bunker was just a small way his body had released all the stress.

"I feel… so tired… I need to rest…" Kai whispered to himself, as his eyes began to close.

Suspecting about his parents… wasn't a good thing.

Kai tossed and turned in bed, trying in vain to find a comfortable position, but his mind was too restless to allow him to sleep.

He forced himself to calm down, taking deep breaths and trying to clear his head of all thoughts.

Yet every time he closed his eyes, the images came back to haunt him: Yuna's distressed face, Hina's soft voice, and worst of all, the man he had killed.

A shiver ran down his spine.

Sleeping peacefully was impossible.

He kept feeling his heart tightening in his chest without anything he could do.

He literally wanted to take his heart and throw it away.

He felt something in his soul changing.

The innocent guy who had to wake up for school everyday was almost gone, replaced by someone who couldn't even see his reflection in the mirror.

He thought that the world , the destiny, everything was against him, ready to ruin the perfect life he was living.

Kai couldn't accept the fact that he killed a man.

Whenever the images of him stabbing the man in the neck flashed in his mind, he felt a lot of mixed feelings.

But there was something he didn't want to accept.

Kai was shocked about what he did, but… he showed no remorse in what he did.

Not even a single glimpse of that…

The fact that he was a killer was devastating him…

He had to talk with Hina as soon as possible.

And more than that, Kai couldn't shake the oppressive feeling that his own parents were hiding something important from him.

He still had full trust in them.

But now, every gesture, every word spoken that evening seemed to be filled with mystery.

Suddenly, a soft sound from the hallway interrupted his thoughts.

A light footstep.

Or maybe it was just his imagination? Either way, his heart began to race.

He decided that, as tired as he was, he had to find out more.

Slowly, he got up from bed, careful not to make any noise, and headed for the door of his room.

As soon as he opened it just a crack, he saw a dim light coming from the dining room.

His parents' voices were low, but clear enough for him to catch a few words.

"We can't keep going like this," he heard his mother say. "Hina will start to suspect. And Kai too…"

Kai held his breath, his heart pounding in his chest. Suspect? Suspect what? What were they trying to hide?

"Yes, I know," his father replied, his voice serious. "But for now, we have no choice. We have to protect him, Haruka. No matter what happens. Even from her, if necessary."

Kai felt a chill run through him.

Were they talking about Hina? The girl he loved? But why would they need to protect him from her?

Without thinking twice, Kai decided to move closer, trying not to make a sound.

He had to discover the full truth, even though he knew that whatever he heard could change his life forever.
