25. Thumb

Martha knew the moment she had woken up in this sandy hell, that something was wrong with her body. While screaming, the sound of her voice, the look of her aged hands and how her figure had changed gave her enough reason to understand. But she just did not want to.

When the few people surviving the incident found each other, she had not opened her mouth again. The child was too shocked to talk, and honestly they all were. Numbly they walked in the sand, only a bit of whimpering and crying here and there showed that they were still together.

Someone walked in this building first, and the others followed the sound. They sat all in the same room, terrified to be alone.

They could feel deeply through their souls that something big had happened. Something that would change all and everything. Everyone could feel it, so adapting was by no means easy.

Nothing changed for what felt like days.

Then the first person went to the toilet, and as if this had been a signal for the others, their bodies slowly awoke and they began caring for their needs.

When Martha went to the bathroom for the first time, and when she saw the empty mirror frame, she felt utterly relieved. She didn't look at her hands ever again.

Then another group found their place, they got more people, and even a touching reunion of two siblings, but nothing much changed, sitting together in the same room, occasionally someone went out and came back with water. Without talking about it they shared the ressources. It was as if greed and dispute were luxuries they didn't have.

Jack came but nobody was very interested in the others, then they moved and became more organized. Conflicts were unavoidable, but Matha, the person who should know the best that something was wrong with the time, still didn't speak. Maybe this had just happened to herself and the others were fine.

But it hadn't only happened to her. And she had been forced to open her eyes to that.

As Jack saw this silly group he suddenly felt a strong sense of belonging. He didn't know if he ever had a home, but here- here it felt nice.

Hey gave a toothy grin back. "You want magic?" He ushered Lilly of the 'stage' and took a coin out of his pocket.

"I can guarantee this will change your lives the same way as the drying shampoo did." He coughed in his fist, then showed the coin to everyone. 'He was born for the stage' (?) Hunter thought.

He let the coin disappear, like last time, but this time he opened his mouth and the coin lay on his tongue. Everyone had clearly seen, as he placed it there when he fake coughed. He was good with his fingers but not with the preparation. Martha's lips twitched while Momo and Hunter stood up and applauded excitedly.

The rest didn't know what to do with their hands so they applauded woodenly. Hunter jumped up and showed everyone his hand "Let me show you another miracle" He formed a fist, with his thumb up. Then he bent the tip of his thump slowly back, tilting it unnaturally wide.

"Woooow" Momo exclaimed and jumped up and down.

Lilly couldn't hold back giggling. "You know, they say that people who can do this have no good handling of money."

"That has nothing to do with me, Jack, give me a coin and let me show them."

"If I want the coin to disappear I can do it myself." Jack laughed..

Martha mumbled "Yes, we saw that..." and Loki and Nick laughed at that louder than they wanted.

When Lenny and the batted Sean walked in, they saw the people here having a good time. Sean felt aggrieved, he didn't want to go out with Lenny. He kissed Emely one time and was too nervous to do anything else when he was caught naked wrestling with Emely who wanted to ride himself. Now his life was full of pain.

Lenny threw Sean unfeelingly aside and gave Jack a metal pole, while giving Lilly the medications she wanted to have.

Hunter eyed the pole suspiciously "Please, tell me that isn't...."
