Upon hearing the door open, Samuel turned to see his sister approaching from the door. She seemed eager about something, and he could tell simply by looking at her that she had something significant to say to him.

He beamed at her from below. "Hi, sis. Do you have any gist?" he asked, closing the notebook before him.

Grinning in return, she sat on the worn-out mattress near her brother's reading table, where he read aloud from his notes. His notebooks were tucked just within the edge of the table, crammed with body lotion, perfume, biros, pencils, and other odds and ends that had no business being on a reading table.

Then she crossed her legs and remarked, "Look like my baby brother knows me very well." She then removed her jacket.

Samuel laughed. "I know you very well, like the palm of my hands. Did something happen on your outing with Avery?"

"You know Avery must not hear you call her by her name."
