Malakai and Amari returned to their makeshift den, the tension in Malakai's body easing as he shared his tale of woe with his sister.

Amari listened intently, her ears perked up in concern, and offered words of reassurance. But Malakai wasn't really angry; he was more frustrated with himself for underestimating the deer.

As they approached the small, plain grassy area surrounded by trees, Malakai's heart swelled with excitement.

The three wolf-like creatures, their pack's guardians, patrolled the perimeter, their eyes watchful but welcoming. In the center of the clearing, lay their mother, her fur now healthy and shiny, her eyes open and alert.
