Chapter 142: For Family

"Okay, I accept," Malakai said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. Aric looked at his sister, who was gazing at him with an expectant smile. "So quick, I mean this is good," they said in unison, their faces lighting up with excitement.

Malakai's eyes darted between the siblings, noticing the way they exchanged a knowing glance. "We're leaving at dawn, while it's still dark," Aric whispered, his voice barely audible over the murmur of the guild's patrons. "When you hear a whistle, come out."

Malakai nodded curtly, his mind already racing with the implications. "Okay then, see you then," he said, his tone a little too casual. He didn't want to stay too long with these two; they still gave him an icky feeling, like a lingering shadow on a moonless night.

As he left the guild, the cool evening air enveloped him, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant tang of smoke from the city's chimneys.
