His name is Kimhan. He's in the same grade as me, but back in middle school, he was the student council president. So, when we moved up to high school, he got drafted into the student council before the school year even started.
Kimhan is a man of few words, very disciplined, and serious about everything. He's tall, fair-skinned, good-looking, smart, athletic, and excels in extracurricular activities. Even though our school is all-boys, girls from other schools often come by to confess their love to him. It's not just the girls who find him impressive, even the guys, including myself, think he's incredibly cool. I'm not alone in this; you can tell by the number of boys who started wearing glasses and acting serious for a while.
In the mornings, Kimhan acts as a school monitor, checking uniforms at the entrance, so we see each other every day. At first, I felt quite uneasy because every time I looked his way, he seemed to be watching me, as if waiting to see if I'd do something foolish again—which I did. Whether it was getting lost during the school marathon because I was distracted by butterflies or getting locked in the gym after sneaking in for a nap, it was always Kimhan who came to my rescue.
I have no idea why it always had to be him, especially since we were in different classes. But every time I saw his face, I felt a little better. Kimhan is good at hiding his feelings, so I never knew what he was thinking. But after he'd punish me with a hard flick to the head, seeing his relieved sigh and slight smile told me that at least he didn't hate me.
Though he seems reserved and hard to approach, I think it adds to his charm as the serious guy with glasses. Over time, we somehow became close friends. It's been about two years now since we first met.
"Why do I have to play Snow White?!"
I shouted in frustration after being forced to play Snow White in the upcoming theater festival.
"Do you guys expect me to play the dumb girl who eats something from a strange old lady and dies!?" I yelled.
"If you're dumb enough to get lost on the way to school, you're probably dumb enough to eat something from a strange old lady," Bomber, who's in charge of the event, shot back, making the whole class burst into laughter.
"It's been two years, and you still haven't let that go?"
"You're small, cute, fair-skinned, with big eyes, chubby cheeks, and plump lips. Add your clumsy, goofy demeanor and your ability to get lost easily, I believe you'll nail the role of Snow White. No, I should say, the role of the dumb girl lost in the woods, barging into strangers' homes, sleeping in their beds, and eating from a strange old lady only fits you," Bomber continued.
Can I punch his face just once?
"Alright, we've got our Snow White. Next, the prince."
"I want to choose, I want to choose!" I said, jumping up and down to get everyone's attention. "Since you guys forced me to be Snow White, I should at least get to pick the prince. Jun, I choose you," I pointed to one of my best friends sitting nearby.
"Me? No way!" Jun protested.
"If he doesn't play the prince, I'm not playing Snow White. Instead of worrying about outside enemies, you might fail because of an internal conflict."
"Would you really sabotage all our efforts?" Bomber asked.
"You know how crazy I can get, right Bomber?" I said with a sinister grin.
"....."
"....."
"...Alright! Jun, you're the prince."
"Yes!" I cheered, clenching my fist in victory. I specifically chose Jun because Bomber probably planned a real kiss scene for publicity. I know him well. Jun, on the other hand, is dating my sister. If he even tried to kiss me, my sister would definitely hear about it.
"Okay, we have our cast. Now, we just need to ensure other classes don't sabotage our performance. We'll split into three groups: preparation, defense, and offense. This year, our class will win!" Bomber rallied the class.
"Win, win, win!"
Watching my classmates cheer loudly, I reflected on the theater festival, a school tradition where first and second-year students put on plays for the seniors, teachers, and alumni. It's like a mid-year initiation ritual. Seeing guys act out love scenes is hilarious, but the best part is seeing how each class tries to sabotage others' performances. The winner is the class that performs without getting interrupted. No one's ever succeeded before, This event is all about pride and honor.
"I've got the news!"
We all turned to look at our classmate, who was sent out as a spy and was now running back breathlessly.
"Class 4 is doing Cinderella, Class 2 is doing Romeo and Juliet, and Class 1 is doing Sleeping Beauty. But most importantly, Kimhan is playing the prince."
"What!?"
Everyone shouted in shock. Kimhan is like an idol to almost every student. Just imagine how much popularity their play will gain with him in it.
"But he's a member of the student council."
"They're saying that even though he's on the student council, this is a performance all second-year students must participate in, so Kimhan has to join."
"Those Class 1 jerks are cheating! We can't let this slide. We need to find a way to eliminate Kimhan!" Everyone in the room quickly huddled together, brainstorming ways to deal with Kimhan.
"I suggest we give him a laxative," Bomber, the mastermind, said immediately.
"You think they'll fall for that? JJ is in the same class as Kimhan. He'll see right through you. Last year, he's the one who made me drink that laxative on your orders," Jun objected, baring his teeth at the mastermind, recalling the embarrassing memory. In times like these, even friends become foes—that's the ironclad rule!
"If we're going to take down Kimhan, we need the most cunning plan, and we can't let it be discovered!"
As soon as I chimed in, everyone in the room turned to look at me.
"You're the one who'll blow our cover. Get out!!"
And with that, they kicked me out of the room.
