Midnight Flashes

Mei is about to graduate, and she and her mother are keeping an eye on the grandfather. Amidst the rain, the family rests.

02:00 AM

A flash emanates from the painting; Huang Yang startles awake in his bed. He thinks it might have been some effect of the rain, but when he looks up from the floor, another flash emerges from the painting. He watches it with a certain fear and hurries to the grandfather’s room. He looks back at the painting but can’t see anything.

—Son, you’ve always feared lightning — says the grandfather.

—It’s nothing, Grandfather, rest — Huang responds.

After making sure his grandfather has lain back down, Huang enters his room, closes the door slightly, takes the painting, and places it behind the cabinet. These are the moments for which his grandparents have prepared him.
