Chapter 45: The Town Merchant

Chapter 45: The Town Merchant

Kains Town had a different style compared to Victoria City. The town in front of him was filled with a British countryside vibe. The town was not large, and various plants were planted outside every building.

The flea market here was also organized along the streets and in the gardens in front of each villa.

Each garden had one or two stalls.

Anyone could enter the gardens and pick the items they wanted at the stalls.

Gu Xi wandered through several gardens. He found, just as the carriage driver had said, that country folk truly had a preference for various mirrors.

The flea market stalls mostly sold all kinds of mirrors, from palm-sized makeup mirrors to full-length mirrors, from the latest mercury mirrors to the older bronze mirrors.

Some people even somehow found a large number of mirror fragments and were selling them at their stalls.

The people buying things didn't mind either, instead pointing and gesturing at some of the mirror fragments, trying to find good pieces from the fragments.

In such a situation, Gu Xi didn't just take a look and move on; he sometimes picked up the mirror fragments to examine them.

Most of them were ordinary mirrors, only a few were stained with eerie energy, but not much, just within the range of gray trash.

The sellers, however, didn't think they were selling trash and often asked for high prices.

At first, Gu Xi thought that with more than a pound on him, even if he wasn't rich, he could buy something here.

But he didn't expect that he was indeed quite poor here; with the little money he had, he couldn't afford anything.

Meanwhile, Gu Xi also noticed some cultists here, who didn't even bother hiding their identities, walking around openly in their black robes.

The stall owners and passersby didn't seem to mind, some even greeted them.

Gu Xi had no intention of dealing with such matters.

He was just killing time and gaining some knowledge.

Gu Xi had already planned to spend a couple of hours here, have lunch, and then go back to the bus station to take the steam bus back.

After that, he wouldn't leave the tavern. He just needed to wait for the people from the Destiny Compass to get things done. Once he had established the anchor point, he could quit the current game.

With such thoughts in mind, Gu Xi's attitude toward the flea market was different from others.

He didn't want anything nor had anything to sell; he was just browsing and killing time.

This made the stall owners see Gu Xi differently, thinking he was an expert, unimpressed by the items before him.

As Gu Xi walked out of one garden, ready to check out another garden in front of a villa, a man stopped him sneakily.

"Customer, I think you're looking for good stuff. I have goods, top-quality goods."

Gu Xi looked at the man. He wasn't very tall, had a high nose, deep eyes, a freckled face, and messy red hair under a top hat.

He wore a black trench coat, and even when blocking Gu Xi, he tightly pressed his coat, clearly acting like a street vendor Gu Xi had met before.

"What? Got good stuff?"

"Yes, over here!" The man's eyes lit up. He glanced around and led Gu Xi to the roadside. Then he opened his coat, revealing the items hidden inside.

Gu Xi saw that the man had at least thirty mirrors hidden inside his coat.

Most of these mirrors were mercury mirrors, some whole, some broken, but every mirror had various magic patterns etched on them.

With Gu Xi's current knowledge, he couldn't fully recognize the patterns on the mirrors.

"How about it? I told you, I have good stuff."

"Where did they come from?"

Gu Xi didn't touch them, observing from a distance.

"Don't worry about the source. My name is Solo, I'm a professional adventurer. I have the ability to find treasures. These have all been authenticated by me, unlike the fake goods at those stalls. I only have good stuff here."

Looking at the mirrors from a distance, Gu Xi couldn't judge their quality. He hesitated but said nothing more.

Solo saw Gu Xi's reaction and knew he was hesitating, so he said, "Since you're here, take a closer look."

As he spoke, he took off his coat and handed it to Gu Xi.

Gu Xi didn't hesitate anymore. As soon as he touched it, the information about the mirrors appeared before his eyes.

[Ordinary Mirror (Gray)...]

[Mirror Contaminated with Eerie Energy (Gray)...]

[Mirror Affected by Eerie Power (Gray)...]

[Mirror with Lost Power (Gray)...]

The more Gu Xi looked, the more helpless he felt, and Solo noticed the change in his expression.

Solo was surprised; he didn't expect Gu Xi to be so picky.

These were the carefully selected best pieces.

Even professional adventurers and powerful cultists from the city recognized Solo's eye for good items. How could Gu Xi find none of them satisfactory?

After Gu Xi had examined everything, Solo carefully took out a box.

The box was deep black, covered with many magic patterns, seemingly sealing something.

"I see you don't like these, right? Take a look at these mirrors then. I wasn't trying to hide them, but these mirrors are so eerie that I had to seal them in a lead box."

"Open it."

Although Gu Xi wasn't satisfied with the mirrors on the coat, he had to admit that Solo had a good eye.

At least half of the mirrors on the coat had eerie energy, much better than the items at the garden stalls.

So he still had some faith in Solo's choices.

Hearing Gu Xi's words, Solo opened the box. Gu Xi noticed that the first layer contained a fragment of a mirror.

The fragment was only palm-sized but pure silver, clearly from a good mirror.

However, for some reason, Gu Xi felt a sense of death from this mirror fragment.

Did this mirror die?
